Katherine Karlin's stories have appeared in One Story, North American Review, ZYZZYVA, Alaska Quarterly Review, L.A. Weekly, and elsewhere. Her fiction has been selected for the Pushcart Prize and New Stories From the South. She has worked in oil refineries in Pennsylvania and Texas, a New Orleans shipyard, and a New York printshop, and currently she teaches creative writing and literature at Kansas State University.

VERISIMILITUDE IN THIS AUTHOR'S WRITING THAT S PRECISE AND WELL DRAWN

Saw this writer at a Writer's Conference and she spoke about her writer journey and how her collection of short stories got published. If you don't normally read short stories I would urge you to check out this collection. The theme is universal everyone can relate to working. Ms. Karlin spoke about her work at oil refineries which she writes about in the book and I found a verisimilitude in her writing that was precise and well drawn upon. The length of these stories are neither too long nor too short which I am sure benefited this writer when publishing her stories. My favorite story is the tale of the young girl who wants to become a welder and get better pay and becomes an apprentice to a one time old time rocker who succeeds in teaching her and she succeeds in creating a better life for her and her mother. These stories encompass New Orleans to New York and Ms. Karlin refers to music in many of the stories which I found enhanced the narrative and gave me a feeling that I was an insider to her settings. I highly recommend this collection and I read it in one weekend. You will not be disappointed. I want to see a novel from this writer.

One of the most gratifying books of short stories I have read in a long time. I sat down with these stories, not sure If I would enjoy them for their subject matter, and finished with a smile of satisfaction. Great prose and interesting characters. This is definitely worth a read.

These are vital, impactful, dramatically realized stories, each uniquely and finely conceived, each nicely balanced in terms of pathos and restraint. I like the lack overall, story by story, of easy answers, of stereotypes and stock situations. I like how the characters in this largely female cast surprise the reader again and again; I like how deftly the endings both resolve and don't resolve what each story sets up. I find the situations and settings believable and compelling. An exemplary gathering of stories!

The stories in this collection read like a list for an Social Issues 101 class. The characters, unfortunately, are one dimensional. Their circumstances are mildly interesting, but rather than being taut and focused, the stories meander around. In the title story, a young woman sees a friend dying from AIDS for the last time. If the story had ended when they parted, or soon after, it might have been pretty good. Instead, there's a piece with a tacked on feeling about the young woman going to visit her friend's father.
