Fascinating book regarding a pivotal time in the Assyrian Empire

This biography of Sennacherib, one of the kings of the ancient Assyrian empire is extremely well written, easy to read and not too long. It makes for a fascinating reads. The reign of Sennacherib saw several pivotal moments in the history of the ancient Near East, such as the famous siege of Jerusalem (as depicted in the book of Kings and Isaiah), and the fall of Babylon. Recommend to anybody interested in deepening their understanding of the ancient near east.

Josette Elayi has provided anyone interested in Assyria an extremely useful tool. For those who are just being introduced to Sennacherib, this book provides a perfect overview of the reign of this Assyrian king, and for those well acquainted, the bibliography is rich, and points of debate are well presented on all sides; perfect opportunities for further research. The text is highly readable and engaging, making this a recommendable book.

This book is well written & is an excellent study of a fascinating ruler. The Assyrians have suffered from being successful - their kingdom had its ups & downs but lasted a very long time - & because they do not come out of the Bible with a glowing reputation, but that is unfair. There really ought to be someone writing a popular book on the Assyrians along the lines of Paul Kriwaczek's book on Babylon. This book is helps fill out the picture of an important period.
