I think for casual listening these are a great, inexpensive set of headsphones. You could leave these on your desk at work or within reach of pets/children and not freak out if something happens to them at the price, yet they are good enough to listen to stuff all day long on without being uncomfortable. You will need to tweak the EQ a little to bring down the mids in my opinion, but most things have an EQ.
After using them for a week, the only complaints I have are that the ear cups are just slightly too shallow, my ears push against the speaker part a little and after several hours it is a little uncomfortable and the cord is SO rubbery it sticks on everything. It's also a VERY long cord, so keep that in mind. If you're listening to music on your phone etc, you're going to need to tie up half of the cord and put it in a pocket or something.
Factor this in that I wear close to a size 8 in baseball caps. There is ample adjustment were the head phone slides in & out of the cushioned head band. In the product image you can see a seam just under where it says “HD 201”, this is where that adjustment takes place. There is also a limited twist joint located here as well.
The pair these replaced were so comfortable, like having your head between two pillows. I guess that comes from being a teenager in the seventies. Big head phones were cool, ear plugs were lame, and the size of your stereo system mattered. Those were good times; toiling away in high school woodshop building cabinets for gigantic speakers. Now I have a couple of little “sissy” cubes that easily match the volume of those old ones, but with a major upgrade in quality.
Let me start by saying that the packaging says that it has a frequency range of 21Hz - 18000 kHz. That being said, don't drool over the low end number. In testing, the Low end can only reach about 36Hz before distorting at a high(ish) volume. Once you lower the volume, sound goes back to normal until about 30Hz. The lower you go, the lower the volume needs to be, until the 21Hz mark. At the lowest limit, the volume needs to be so low that I cannot hear the frequency over the ambient noise in the room (a/c, wind, and the occational car). When listening to a frequency sweep, it is easy to tell where the headphones are EQ'd out. This happens at about 1400Hz, 1600Hz, 4500Hz, 9kHz, and anything above 17kHz. I'd say that the actual frequency response is from 30Hz - 16.5kHz.
What does this mean? It mean your not going to get the lowest ends of the bass drum or highest "tss" of the cymbals.
Not a big deal? Well, good. That's what separates audiophiles and everyone else. That, and audiophiles spend $500+ on headphones, and you're seriously looking at $20 ones. Good job with these. Although the frequency response rating is crap, the headphones themselves are great! I'd even say entry level audiophile. Everything sounds crisp and warm and most importantly, EVENLY BALANCED. It's nice to see headphones that aren't so bass heavy that you can't hear the rest of the music.
That being said, if you really care, get your self a headphone amp and/or equalizer software. All music is different and sometimes you need to change what they (the headphones) sound like.
If these are your first real pair of headphones, you're not going to like them at first; everything is going to sound dull and flat. But as you listen to your favorite song for the first time, you're going to hear things that you've never head before because they're no longer covered up with low frequencies. After about a day you're going top love the way these sound and hate the way your old stuff sounds. You will notice the low frequencies covering everything up and being distorted, in your old stuff that is. These are a good start on the track to knowing what music is supposed to sound like.
These are over ear headphones with a 10 foot cord and 3.5mm jack. the only other thing in the box is a 3.5mm - 1in adapter.
I'd recommend these to anyone who wants to get into the high quality audio game. Not too big of a gamble at $20. Great gift.
Sennheiser is a VERY reputable source. I trust them with my sound equipment. If you wanted to keep looking, look at other Sennheiser products, JBL, or Audio-Technica. Those are the 3 brands that I trust.
