Disappointed but not really surprised
on July 21, 2014
I bought these based on a recommendation from "The Wirecutter" site as to the "best" earbuds for exercise. Though I have been on an unfulfilled quest for the perfect workout earbuds for years, I thought there was a chance these might fill the bill.
First, I like the idea of the hook that goes around your ear to secure the earbuds. I have never found a pair of earbuds that will stay in my ear when I start sweating, unless they have some gizmo to anchor them on the ear. Second, they have in-line controls, and a mic, which is an essential for me since I always exercise with a smartphone. Last, I thought Sennheiser had a reputation for quality sound.
Alas, now that I have used the product for several months, I have to say that it definitely does not qualify. The two main failures of the product are 1) The inline controls stopped working, and started causing audio to pause and skip at unexpected times the first time they were exposed to a good sweat; and 2) The sound quality is not very good. It is OK, but for the things I listen to most often, the sound quality is about the same as the cheapest earbuds I have owned.
The one feature that works pretty well are the hooks that hold the earbuds in your ears. They do a decent job of keeping the earbuds in place, even when I sweat. I wish they had made them flexible, though, so you could shape them to your individual ear geometry. But overall, they work well, and are the reason I continue using the headset, although I have to run the cord outside of my shirt so the controls are not directly exposed to my sweat.
I want to add that I have tried several headsets, both wired and bluetooth, that claim to be designed for use when exercising. In EVERY case so far, the controls have been the weak link. They have failed very quickly...often the first time they have been exposed to a real sweat. I wonder if I sweat more profusely than most people, or have especially corrosive sweat. I volunteer myself as a test subject to earbud manufacturers.
