While not as refined and accurate as open-back headphones costing much more, the inexpensive HD 239 gets about 85% of the way there, reproducing well recorded and mastered high fidelity music very well for a headphone of this type/price-point.
These headphones are built for those who know how to, or would like to learn how to, appreciate all that real high fidelity music has to offer:
* The lows are clear and extended; slightly emphasized without the bloat, boom, bloom, or unnatural exaggeration found in so many of the consumer-type headphones (like Beats, V-Moda, etc.).
* The mids and highs are well balanced, accurate, and clear; and the sound stage is quite good when the source is well recorded in stereo (binaural recordings best demonstrate this).
I don't need to repeat what others have said regarding the ergonomics, build quality, etc. that are typical of headphones in this price range.
The audio cable, while thin, appears to be durable, there are no cable microphonics.
The HD 239 interfaces well with all my portable devices, and carries a 2 year warranty in the US.
In my opinion, the HD 239 could be one of the, if not *the*, best sounding open-back on-ear high fidelity headphone currently on the market at this price point, and so I recommend it highly.
It has definitely earned a place in my personal "best-of breed" collection.

About "Burn-in" / "Break-in":
Enjoy the Senn HD 239 headphones right out of the box. Playing music or pink noise through them continuously for dozens of hours on end before using them is silly. Why? Because the need to break-in/burn-in headphones is nothing more than uninformed urban legend.
I'm a retired recording engineer and studio owner, and I don't know of any professional audio people who give "burn-in" any credence. The subjective perception of "burn-in" is the user's hearing being re-trained and adjusted to the frequency response curve of the headphone. For example, a listener coming from a headphone whose response curve boosts the lows and dips the mids will hear a headphone with a natural, flat and uncolored signature (like theSenn HD 239) as having a shallow bass and a strident upper mid range. As the listener's hearing adapts over time to the uncolored accuracy of the neutral/flat headphones, the headphones miraculously "improve" after having been "burned-in", when in fact it's the listener's hearing being "burned-in" by the headphones.
The only formal study on this subject of which I'm aware was inconclusive, finding that if there is any such effect at all, it is at best very subtle. It can be found on the InnerFidelity web site by searching on "On the Measurement and Audibility of Headphone Break-in". Read it and decide for yourself.

In terms of comfort, both products are quite light and nicely padded so you hardly know they are there. Both sit on the ear allowing air to flow through keeping your ears from getting overheated. For listening times under an hour, both wear well and you even forget they are there. The big difference is for longer sessions. I found the HDs have a tighter fit and stronger, less yielding headband making it necessary to take breaks from them. The PXs are lighter fitting making long term listening a breeze however they will definitely slip off your ears every time you bend over limiting their usefulness at the gym.
If great sound is what matters most then you will hear a huge difference between these headphones. While the PXs put out impressive sound given their compact size (and way better than any ear buds I've tested), the HDs are a huge step up. Both have the characteristic warm and mellow Sennheiser sound but the HDs are fuller with real bass and more natural tendencies. Both need listening time to open up as they can be a bit dull at first. Advantage: the HDs are a clear winner and probably sound better than phones costing twice as much. I just wish I could wear them for longer sessions as the sound is terrific.
Overall I am super happy with the HDs despite their shortcomings because I love music and can't believe the quality sound that comes out of these babies. Maybe the headband spring tension will loosen over time allowing longer listening sessions. Also, I wish Sennheiser would jump on the replaceable wire bandwagon as the wires on both of these products are really fragile and prone to damage.
Wasn't disappointed at all. Coming from some great but very budget headphones over the last couple of years like JVC HA-s400 (my favorite til HD239), Monoprice 8323 and 8320, Koss KSC75 and Koss UR55, these HD 239s were definitely worth the price at 64. Very noticeable upgrade when switching back to the budget headphones.
Surprisingly comfortable with the different layers of foam in the earpads. Very soft type of foam (maybe memory foam) against the ear with the typical, more firm, earpad foam on the outer side against the earcups.
Only a small con for me that I could live without adjusting, but it's worth mentioning:
The treble benefits from a boost.
I ended up boosting the treble from 6khz-9khz by 2db-4db, respectively. Leaving 9khz-10khz alone and boosting 11khz+ by 4db. You can probably get away with an overall treble boost but you might get some harshness because 9khz-10khz doesn't seem to need it. I also boosted around 2.4khz by a couple db but that's not too notable.
I still think these are great without any EQ but I'm using these at my PC with the Equalizer APO/Peace GUI so it's easy enough to run though SineGen and make adjustments.
Top reviews from other countries
I thought about Dr Dre's headphones, the cheaper ones at £115 or similar. However the reviews for that were terrible and when I tried them in John Lewis they were nothing special.
So for me it came down to getting some nice sennheiser's as those are the best pair of in-ears I've ever owned. In John lewis the HD239's were £90. I refunded the gift from christmas, and then on Amazon bought a pair of HD238's (£35) and a pair of HD239's (£65), meaning I only spent £10 more and I wanted to see the difference between these headphones.
I discovered that Sennheiser have definitely got it RIGHT. They know how to make a good quality affordable pair of headphones. The HD238's were very good for their price, I thought there was going to be no difference at first, but there is definitely a clear difference in quality, which is brilliant because otherwise you could be paying £30 less for essentially the same pair of headphones. The bass and treble is clearer within the HD239's, showing the voice and every individual instrument slightly better resulting in and overall much better quality.
The one disadvantage which is obvious with both pairs (although slightly less so with the HD239's), is that if you like to listen to music loudly like me, you are going to disturb everyone around you as they are very clear and loud to everyone around you, for instance very disturbing if listening on a bus.
I have decided to use the HD238's because they are still superb, and I tend to destroy headphones when I use them, so when I do destroy them I can go onto the more expensive and better HD239's.
