Top customer reviews
In the end, it depends upon where you’re going to use the headphones, and your own person listening preferences. But.. . for the most part. . . . if you’re listening in your own home, then you could use either/or. If you’re using them on a subway. . .or in an office environment. . . . then you’ll want the “closed-back” for sure.
These headphones are VERY comfortable. I’ve used them for several days. . . several hours each day. . . without a problem. I like that there is a nice long cable too. . . . BUT. . . it comes with a 6.3mm jack only. You’ll probably either need. . . or at least want. . . .an adapter for 3.5mm. I believe that Sennheiser may also offer a 3.5mm cable, as the cable on these headphones is removable. . . but this version of these headphones only comes with the 6.3mm cable/jack.
Personally, for critical listening including gaming and sound production then closed type headphones are your best bet. But for music enjoyment, open back is your best friend.
Unfortunately open back headphones by its very nature also leaks audio to the environment which means if you are sharing your space with other people then this shouldn't be your first choice - etiquette-wise.
I wish switching between closed type to open back headphones can be seamless with the sound stage the only difference. Unfortunately switching between an Audio Technica ATH-M50x (closed type) to the Sennhieser HD 559 (open back) the clarity in mids are identical. The glaring difference is the lack of bass on the Sennheiser. Because of the lacking lows, the vocals tend to stand out.
So at this point it's whether you want a seemingly bigger soundstage (HD 559) or a typical in-your-face experience (ATH-M50x). Switching between both, you'll need to calibrate your hearing by spending a longer time in between.
Also I'm not a bass person, but I do like to know that if there is heavy bass in the music I'd like the headphones to deliver. This is not the case with the Sennheiser. The HD 559 is truly for general listening and not for audiophiles. I'd let my kids have at it and still allow me to converse with them as needed.
The second issue I have is that at this price range, it only comes with one proprietary cable that terminates to a 1/4 stereo plug versus an everyday 1/8 stereo plug. And there isn't even an adapter to help you get connected so you can transition from your home stereo to your mobile devices (smart phones and tablets). I bought an adapter at my local music store. It was cheap at retail pricing so I don't know why Sennheiser can't toss it in for convenience. A little goes a long way in image and customer satisfaction.
With the Audio Technica in the same price range, I get three cables in the same colour as the chosen headphones - one long straight cable, one short straight cable, and one coiled cable.
Third, the quality of the plastics in the Sennheiser feels cheap. I like German plastics especially in automobile keys. They are sturdy and thick. With this model, it just feels outright flimsy.
Finally, the ear and head pads also feels cheap. If someone were to let me close my eyes and hold this and try to guess the brand, I would have guessed it's an unknown manufacturer trying to enter the headphone market attracting teenagers. But it isn't and the cost is prohibitive.
If I were to spend my money wisely, this would be far from my list at this price range.
I understand that the write up clearly tries to sell this headphone as for your home entertainment system and the excuse why they only provide one straight cable with no adapter or carry case. But still how much more will it cost to provide this convenience at this day and age. Cost saving versus customer convenience and we know what Sennheiser chose.
Overall, decent sound that just misses the boat in attracting new listeners to the brand by not providing an assortment of cables and accessories at this price range.
