Before I delve into the nitty gritty parts of this review let me first say that headphones are SUBJECTIVE. If you like bass heavy headphones (e.g. beats by dre) that vibrate on your head then these are not for you. Now that that's out of the way let's continue. The 598s have a higher 50 ohm impedance compared to the norm of 32 ohms so you might have trouble getting the volume you want out of certain devices. This can be easily overcome with an amplifier. I'm using an Aune T1 tube DAC/AMP combo to drive the 598s since I prefer a warmer sound.
I would say the biggest difference between the M50s and 598s is the soundstage. Now if you're unfamiliar with the term 'soundstage' all it really refers to is the headphone's ability to reproduce sound in a way that tricks your ears into perceiving the music is coming from all around you. Rather than being confined to the space in between your ears and the closed back of the M50s the 598's open back design allows sound to penetrate the back of the headphones which in turn creates a more 'open' soundstage. For me, it opened my eyes to an entirely new listening experience. These things do leak sound (which they're designed to do) so if that is something you're trying to avoid then these won't work for you.
In terms of comfort, the 598s take it by a long shot. I was never able to wear the M50s for longer than 2-3 hours before my ears started to ache. The 598s for one have velour ear pads which help a lot and they don't clamp onto your head nearly as firmly as the M50s do. I feel like I could wear these all day without even noticing they're there.
Bottom line, if you are looking to venture into open back headphones the Sennheiser HD 598s offer a value you won't get out of anything else.

Soundstage is amazing. Openness is amazing. To be completely frank I don’t really care about having much better headphones than these. I’m sure there are $1,000+ headphones out there that beat these, but by how much? Plus let’s not forget you probably need an amp. I’ve owned 4 good quality headphones and some earbuds for reference. These are the best for music. They’re also very light considering their size. I also have the closed version of these. These DO sound better, not by that much though. It’s the openness that makes them sound better.
If you’re looking for open headphones, get these. Trust me you won’t be disappointed and these are priced right imo. If you’re looking for closed headphones get the closed version of these, they sound 95% as good and are the best closed headphones I’ve listened to, I love them.
I’ve had audio-technica headphones and those are trash compared to these. Best bang for your buck had to be my first set of headphones which were the sony v6. Those headphones were amazing for the price and were much better than the audio-technica. Also, if you’re looking for audio-technica headphones I recommend you stop because they sound like they’re half the price they’re selling them at. I really don’t get why they’re such a popular brand.
If these or the closed ones (they’re old too) broke, I’d get the same exact headphones because these sound so damn good and are priced right. I think that says it all.
I've owned the HD 558's for about a year now, so I am very used to how they sound. I've used them with and without the foam mod, and all the research in the world tells me that the 558's with the foam mod sound nearly identical to the 598's.
I believed that up until the day I picked up the 598's.
I own a pair of HD 650's and a pair of HE-400i's, so I've been ruined when it comes to listening to headphones that are inexpensive. My audio gear is a little overkill for the 598's - an Asgard 2 and a Bifrost Multibit, and I don't think it benefits them as much as my higher end headphones. With that said, I was super impressed with the 598's, so impressed that I began swap testing with my other headphones. They can't be THAT good I thought... And lets be honest, they aren't, but they are very close. Granted, the HD 650 are warmer and more neutral, as are the HE-400i's with added bass extension and attack, but the 598's are more fun, have almost as much detail and clarity, and are fast enough for just about any genre. I could go on and on about how these headphones made me question my life choices blah blah blah, but lets just say these may be the last pair of headphones you ever buy if you aren't willing to invest heavily in the audiophile world.
Compared to the HD 558s - Overall better in every way. They both use the same drivers.... but do they really? Does Sennheiser bin the drivers they make for this line of headphones? Do the 598's get the absolute best of the bunch? It can't all be in the enclosure.... The largest difference is the detail retrieval in the treble range, it was the very first thing I noticed and the 598's absolutely stomp the 558's in this area. Mids are lush and beautiful and bass is warm and tight with a bit of extension, not bloomy or loose at all (looking at you too HD 650....). Soundstage is larger and airy and makes you feel like you're surrounded with warm lush music. They make great gaming headphones as well, placement is very accurate.
The only thing this headphone lacks is a little bit of sparkle in the treble. This seems to be a common theme among a lot of Sennheisers (the veil...), but I was pleasantly surprised that the 598 responds well to EQ. A 3dB boost in the 10k region is all I needed to get the little bit of extra detail out of them.
I'm terrible at reviews like this so I'll stop here. Summary of these headphones - absolute price point beasts, possibly the last pair you'll ever buy. They do everything very well, and may be your perfect match. It's possible that they scale very well with gear too (aka why do they sound THIS good?) I have yet to test this so I may edit this review in the future with my findings.
EDIT 1
With some burn in time, the treble level seems to have increased, and bass might be a little looser? Can't tell for sure, but the treble is def better now. As for gear scaling, I tested it with a Modi 2 Uber and it still sounds amazing. So there ya go. A super fun set of cans that will compliment my HE-400i.
Top reviews from other countries
You can get the review from the geek who analyses the bandwidths, the "audiophile" who decides this or that headphones best portrays Mahler's variations on the Sex Pistols, etc etc. Meaningless, really, 'cos they are just opinions.
So for what it's worth, here's my opinion of these headphones;
I predominately listen to Blues based music, with the occasional piece of Classical thrown in. I've listened to Clapton's Driftin' Blues/Ramblin' On My Mind (from the Crossroads2 album), and I've listened to Nigel Kennedy playing Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending.
Both sounded Absolutely Outstanding through these headphones. The guitar and bass of Clapton, and the climax to Lark Ascending were delivered with superb clarity. I'm happy with these cans, think you could be, too.
anyway, to get to the point: these headphones are very, very good. they are not perfect. sure, I could spend £8,000 on a pair of really silly headphones if I was an idiot, but I was sold on the brown/beige thing at first glance. they make me feel like the black guy from Enter the Dragon. ach! alas, if they only had big novelty volume sliders.
they DO NOT enhance the bass. they do nothing to the sound except play it with perfect, beautiful clarity into your ears. they DO leak sound. for classical music they are wonderful. they make you feel like you can hear the choir tremble when you play Orff, but sound a bit wooden and middle-y when Lamb of God start shouting about walking in hell. like so many things, the sound they reproduce depends on the quality of the other stuff in the mix.
I would suggest if you want to rattle the bum cheeks on someone three seats away on the bus, then buy the equivalent Dr.Dre headphones - also very good. if you wish to blow your mind with such superb balance, and have a pair of really decent headphones for recording and mixing, I recommend these. good price, good stuff.
also the brown velvety ear cups feel like rubbing your ears on a rabbit's bottom
Music that I have listened to for forty years suddenly sounds entirely fresh and new. I can precisely hear all the individual ingredients of a track: the lead vocalist, the backing singers and the session musicians as if I was in the room with them. The reviewer who said these cans are 'greedy for detail' nailed it. Instead of a blob of noise or a wall of sound, I find myself in the recording studio listening to the music makers.
These headphones catch everything: coughs, belches, sniffs, whimpers, whispers, you name it. I highly recommend them.
Sennheiser make a £500 pair of head phones. I cannot imagine they would be that much better than these are. To my mind these HD 598 cans are just about perfect.
You lose some subtlety with some noisier tracks, but I suspect that might be down to the quality of the recordings as opposed to the head phones.
Excellent sound! Best headphones I ever had by far.
The basses are punchy and gorgeous without being too boomy.
Overall the sound feels beautifully balanced, especially good for acoustic music. Compared to a flat reference AKG [and I only tried 1 so no idea if all AKGs are that flat.. but so I've heard : D ].. they are warmer and more alive. Whether that is good or bad, you decide. It's good for me, I want to hear detailed, balanced, and clean sound.. that is also satisfying and warm, because to me that's an ideal sound system.
The Evil:
Not too loud on the exterior, but they can be a bit noisy IF you pump up the volume. Just a bit though.
They don't cancel any exterior sounds.
So don't wear them outdoors or at work.. O___O
The Bad:
I had a buzz problem with one of the speakers after less than 1 year of use. And the leather stitching came off a bit. That was unexpected of such a high quality product. I think they sent it back with the same buzz, or a bit less buzz.. the first time, if I remember well. It got serviced perfectly the second time and the company payed for the postal services.
