Arguably the best deal in headphones for the office audiophile.
After much thought and careful painstaking research, i finally committed, and bought a pair of the HD 598's. And i have absolutely no regrets!! I was comparing these against the higher and lower Sennheiser models, and also tried on a pair of the Bowers and Wilkins P7's, and i can safely say the 598's are better. I work in these 8 hours a day, and they breathe better, are more comfortable (lighter weight, softer ear cups, softer head band, lower contact pressure), have a broader, more accurate sound stage, and are less than half the price. Now these are open ear, which is nice in the office. I can listen with tremendous fidelity and still hear my name if I'm not rocking out too hard. I am spaced about 5 feet from my cube mates, and i have asked them if they can hear my music at 75% volume, and they say no, so the sound leakage isnt something to worry about. Some say the bass is lacking, and i agree. However, there is an app for that! I downloaded Equalizer and Bass Booster for free on my Samsung Galaxy S4 running Lollipop, and they now have all of the bass i will ever need. Truly, if you want the best sound possible out of these at lower volumes, then they probably need a small amp. My phone just doesnt have the power to drive these well at really low volumes, which is where i prefer to listen since i want to protect my hearing. However, i am completely satisfied with their current performance, as they provide all the glorious sound i would ever need at 30-50% volume (which is also enough to drown out surrounding conversations). I also recommend purchasing the HD 598 carrying case, it is a very nice semi-rigid case with a soft plush interior to protect your investment. I carry these to and from work in my backpack every day and it fits perfectly. Only downside is you have to collapse the headband to get them to fit without bending the cable, but that is hardly something to worry about. Also, i did not buy the shorter cable. I heard it has quality issues, and i am able to keep the 3 meter cable in the original twist tie it came in. I did let one or two loops out to give me enough cable to move with, and i have had zero issues with this set up so far. Bottom line, if you are looking to jam for 8 hours a day in front of a computer, and still be aware of your surroundings, you can not go wrong with these!

Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2011

    Purchased from Amazon December 2010.

I'm quite satisfied with this product. I have had my HD598s for a little over a month now and listen to them through my Macbook and the HeadRoom Total Bithead. I have to say that they are without a doubt more refined than the foam-modded HD555 (which is basically a HD595). As I am writing this review, I have both hooked up to the HeadRoom Total Bithead with the crossfeed circuit turned on.

The first thing that I notice going from the modded HD555 to the HD598 is the added bass. For anyone who found the bass on the HD555/595 to be somewhat anemic, the HD598 (while not pumping bass at the level of closed cans) definitely has bass that has more weight, is tighter, and is noticeably more refined. Lower frequencies of bass can easily be heard on the HD598 that were absent on the HD555/595. Bass punch is about the same on both cans.

The mids/highs on the HD598 are less forward than those of the HD555/595. For anyone that found the HD555/595 to have a glaring, screeching tone to it that would make it uncomfortable to listen to, the HD598 has addressed that problem and pulled the mids back. Additionally, the mids/highs are noticeably more refined on the HD598 than the HD555/595 giving it a clearer and more textured sound, which too helps in longer listening sessions.

The HD598 has a more open sound to them than the HD555/595. I'm not sure why this is the case since the grilles on the back of the HD555/595 are actually slightly bigger than those of the HD598. It is probably the new driver design. This gives the HD598 a more relaxed sound than the HD555/595. The HD598 also has a significantly bigger soundstage than the HD555/595. Instrument separation is noticeably better on the HD598.

The HD598 is more comfortable than the HD555/595. The frame design is very similar but the HD598 has better earpads and the drivers are housed farther away from the ears so that the ears are not touching the driver. The clamping force on the HD598 is slightly stronger than that of the HD55/595. However, I have found this to be preferable since the headphones don't have as much of a tendency to fall off my head while I'm studying now.

All in all, the HD598 is a better headphone than the HD555/595 in every way. The only exception that I could think of is if you listen to a lot of hardcore or death metal in which case the more forward mids of the HD555/595 could be of preference. I have listened to alternative, trance, house, electro, acoustic, songwriter music, R&B, jazz (pretty much everything) on both pairs of headphones and in every case liked the HD598s better. The increased refinement has made a difference for me.

However, the HD598 is not a perfect headphone. The plastic construction still gives the headphones the same slightly cheap feel as the HD555/595. Its durability is also very similar to that of the HD555/595. The HD598 also isn't as open or airy as the Audio-Technica AD-700, though it does have better instrument separation and linear extension of soundstage (imaging) than the AD-700. The sound of the HD598 is also slightly (but only very slightly) more refined than the AD-700 in the mids and highs, and provides a balanced frequency response while the AD-700 lacks bass.

For those that are wondering, the HD558 is not just a HD598 with the foam sticker inside the housing. Whereas removing the foam tape from the HD555 basically made them the HD595, removing the foam tape from the HD558 does not make them the HD598. The housing is different in the two cans. And according to an excellent article by Mike at Headfonia.com, this makes a noticeable difference in sound. (Link: [...]).

I am not an audiophile and I have not owned any headphones or amps better than my current setup of the Sennheiser HD598 and the HeadRoom Total Bithead. Given several years time, I would like to upgrade to a HD600 or HD650 with an appropriate amp and DAC. But until then, I have to say that I am very pleased with my current setup.

Update (7/15/11): For those in the community that are concerned about the headband cracking problem, this was a problem only with the first batch of these headphones released by Sennheiser. My pair was amongst this first batch and cracked. However, it is covered under warranty and Sennheiser will replace your headphones for free. Any pair of HD598s manufactured after this first batch has been made with a new type of composite plastic that does not have this cracking problem. On my replacement pair, the plastic is noticeably more flexible so I do believe corrective steps have been taken.

A few new words on the sound of these headphones. The 598s have a very unique sound signature. They sound brighter than my modded 555s yet give less of a screeching sound which makes them somehow less fatiguing while extending the upper frequency ranges and giving more detail. I have since the first writing of this review had the chance to demo the HD600 and HD650 briefly on a micro amp. The HD600 has a more refined sound but a significantly smaller soundstage than the 598s. I'm sure I would've been pleased with the 600s if I had gone to them directly from the modded 555s but having gotten used to the enormous soundstage and more upfront sound of the 598s, I found the 600s to be quite dull. As for the HD650s, they are a very different headphone from the HD598s. The HD650 is obviously more refined but is more laid-back, has significantly more lower frequency bass, darker sound (more rolled-off highs, more "politeness") and a better feeling of ambiance than the HD598. However, I do still think the HD598 has a bigger soundstage than the HD650 though not by much, especially when the HD650 is matched with the correct (albeit expensive) amp. I prefer the HD598 over the HD600 but find myself liking the HD650 as much as the HD598 simply because both headphones have something unique to offer to the music that is played on them. In terms of construction quality, the HD650 obviously has the upper hand here.

I continue to love these headphones and still wholeheartedly recommend them so long as you are not expecting sound isolation or very powerful bass from your headphones.

Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2015
    Color: GrayStyle: without MicrophoneVerified Purchase
These are an excellent headphone, These headphones were one of two headphones that I purchased, after having an extensive comparison with such luminaries as the Shure SRH840 Professional Monitoring Headphones, AKG Q 701 Quincy Jones, AKG K702, Beyerdynamic DT 770 , Grado Prestige Series SR225e , Audio-Technica ATH-M50, Superlux HD668B, Sony MDR7506 Professional, along with several other headphones that were returned.

As background, I primarily judged the headphones upon them costing less than $300, having excellent accurate sound that is flat (no emphasis on base, etc), that can be used through an iPod, that are comfortable and can be worn for hours, that are well built and have parts that can be purchased in the event of some part failure.

I listened to the above headphones for many, many hours, going back and forth to compare one headphone with another. Since my conclusions are subjective to my own preferences in sound, I should state that I listen to a lot of piano music, from jazz piano trio, classical, movie themes, piano solo, big band, and some new age fusion. I want headphones that can accurately reproduce piano, brass, bass, and percussion. I like a "flat" sound that accurately reproduces the music as it sounds when it is played, without emphasizing any range like bigger bass. I don't listen to rock much anymore, or I might have chosen headphones that play electric bass, but heavy bass can hurt your hearing over time.

I could spend a great deal of time comparing all of the above headphones, but that would be a large undertaking, beyond the scope of this review. I can say that all of the above headphones were tested for a 4-6 week period, for many hours (I even sleep with headphones on). I would go back and forth comparing the sound with another headphone, frequently going back and forth, before finally picking the better of the two, and then I would compare that headphone with the another pair of headphones, again going back and forth. I wasn't spending my time with a notebook trying to put my experience and comparisons into words for other people to read later, but rather spent my time closely listening to the sound of the music, and being sure that the headphones would not hurt after extended listening. Hopefully, my review will be helpful as more of a "bottom line" conclusion based upon extensive listening.

I chose the above headphones to compare after reading extensive reviews and rankings in the wonderful website head-fi.org, in their rankings of over-ear headphones, so these are all over ear headphones. I prefer those over-ear headphones to on-ear headphones, as the latter tend to hurt your ears when worn for many hours. Also, over ear headphones tend to have more sound isolation from outside noise,

Thus, all of the above are the most highly rated headphones, that cost less than $300. Many of the top rated headphones cost less than $300, and those that cost over a thousand dollars are a large price to pay for almost negligible differences, for most listeners. Each of the above headphones that were compared are very highly rated.

The Sennheiser HD 598 Over-Ear Headphones are perhaps the most comfortable of all headphones,at times seeming to barely grasp my head.

Con: The only fault that I could find was 1. The cord that comes with it has the large adatper that won't fit in an iPad, and even if you unscrew the adapter, the remaining 3.5 mm is so short that the enclosing wire sheathing prevents it from fitting into an iPod. I have to buy a replacement cord, which is cheaper on Amazon. And
    2. The headphones let in more noise than other headphones, but that is probably related somewhat to the lack of clamping pressure that makes it so comfortable. I also kept the Shure SRH840 Professional Monitoring Headphones, which I wear if I want to exclude more outside noise.

Bottom Line: I love these headphones. Having heard the best in extensive comparison testing, I never experience buyer remorse, wokdering if there is something better out there. There is nothing missing that makes me want more. I do plan to avoid testing any headphones that cost over $1,000, though many reviews rank them as having lesser sound than less expensive models.

To make a long story short, I finally chose to keep both the Sennheiser HD 598 Over-Ear Headphones, and the Shure SRH840 headphones.

I am especially fond of the Sennheiser HD 598 when I am around other people, and I want to hear them talking to me, or hear the phone ring. Also, these headphones are perhaps the most comfortable of all, as they actually feel a tad loose when worn, not subjecting me to the clamping pressure of many headphones, that make them unwearable in less time. The sound quality is simply outstanding.

It was hard not to include the AKG
These are highly rated headphones that are loved by many people, which I can certainly appreciate. My final choice was so close that I bought both and the Sennheiser HD 598, which are mighty strong competition for any headphone comparison. All the headphones I tried are very highly rated, but the competition required that I eliminate the headphones that I did not like s well as others. I could have given them all four to five stars, but I want to differentiate my findings for the benefit of others. I loved these the first time I heard them, but when compared with others, they were unremarkable.

Reviewed in India on August 17, 2016
    Color: GrayStyle: without MicrophoneVerified Purchase
So after using 10,000+ hours with ATH M50x , wanted an upgrade .

Oh boy ! These definitely are worth it . Let me start with these are Open air headsets vs M50x closed air headsets . Now all the top headphones in the world are Open Air , So HD 598 come under Entry level of this technology .

Comfort ( 10/10 ) : When i say comfort 10/10 , I mean it . These are most comfortable headsets i ever won . U can use them for 10+ Hours and you won't notice you are wearing headsets . Cushion pads are soft also on the leather on head . They should fit in all ear types comfortably .

Sound : ( 10 / 10 ) : These headsets have crystal clear sound , You can hear more detailed sound in Music , Movies & Games which u have not heard before . Awesome sound stage . Bass is neutral side which is fine for me you can probably boost it up with AMP / DAC .

Sound Isolation : Headsets have no sound isolation , so you have to use them for in house & in quiet environment . They have sound leakage at max volume so what that means other's can hear you what you hearing .

Final Verdict : If u are owner of M50x and looking to upgrade after 2-3 years + i would say go for it since they are best Entry level Open can headsets before your journey to HD 800 ;)

    Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn:
Adapter für an mp3 Player(Discman, PC) is dabei(gute Qualität).
Der Tragekomfort is top.

Upgraded to 5* (after listening to just-out-of-the-box AKG K702 but before SennHD650) - first impressions HD598 is definitely richer, warmer & is pleasurably more engaging "emotionally". The AKGs within its first 30mins are superb as well, just quieter, leaner, more sedate & impersonal - exactly as ppl say in reviews. I will be feeding back continually along it's "burn-in curve".

After 30-40hrs of burn in, I have refallen in love with the sounds of the K702 using the E7 DAC amp. This might be the one for the long haul. HD598 is a tad coloured and trails a fraction in sound separation.
    ======================================================================================================================================

As a newbie to the HP scene (ie being a token hifi person), it was a daunting task to sieve through the plethora of hps available on market with all it's technological "advances" or "non advances". Product comparison posed a challenge as well as my country tends to trail in model availability and most shops carry a limited range. Hence this purchase was a leap of faith based on review findings and forum discussions. I was really just searching for a simple but quality pair of headphones for my new clavinova whose 40Wx2 speakers did not do full justice to it's true sound capability - hence the hp... but then, it got bigger than ben hur. Keeping to a narrow focal range, it was a toss between the AKG K271MKII, K702 or this. I had needed something that had excellent SQ in all registers (but did not need hot-heavy-thumping bass), has accurate reproduction, sound separation, some spatial soundstage yet which doubles as a listening hp for my repertoire of music driven from the i-toys (mac, pod, phone, pad). Thus the consideration that it should not be too difficult to drive. Repertoire comprise mostly accoustics, baroque, tenors, jazz, light rock, and a little bit of everything else except heavy metal. Priority was for unplugged/ accoustic music (piano, flute, guitar), jazz, tenors, operas, baroque classics and and some legacy audiophile music to sound amazing.

    Here's the take.
The packaging & product visual was high quality ...with made in China (miCh) sitting subtly at the bottom flap.
UPS topped themselves again with a record delivery time of 4days fr order date (to the other side of the globe and hemisphere).
The touch & feel was quality. However, tempting as it maybe, I would not want to fall asleep in them as one wouldn't want to risk turning over and stressing the headphone joints...et cetera et cetera.

First sound impressions driven fr the clavinova was disappointing (sounded the same as the speakers) - results were varied depending on the instrument type used especially when used with accompaniment styles/rhythms. How ironic. Though touted as not needing breaking-in, I found that the hps quickly improved within 2-4 hours on my iPod.

From the following sampling on the HD598, driven largely unamped from the iPodClassic (vis a vis amped minicompo), my personal finding was as follows:

EXQUISITE: Il Divo2x (shivers!), Amici, Michal Hromek's Celtic Guitar (bliss...), Dire Straits (T-Rd,Love/Gold,PI -whoA!), Alicia Keys Unplugged, Sting, H Connick Jr, Buble, DECCA World of Vivaldi, Puccini's Turandot & Handel's Six Recorder Sonatas (Jarrett/Petri) & The Messiah (Trevor Pinnock), old Jazz Instrumentals like Kenny G & Don Kaz + Jamiroquai's 7days7nights...et cetera & probably Stairway to Heaven; surprisingly the bass did not disappoint but was rather VERY impressive in Black Eyed Peas's "Where is the Love" - to me HD 598 has the total package, smooth & balanced yet crisp in higher registers without killing my ears even on full volume. ~ Really must try Clapton unplugged (when I find it).

V Good/Ordinary: Freddy Cole, fourplay, Michael Harrison & Friends (akin reproduction from my old hifi sources), Bob James Hands Down, Grusin's Mountain Dance, Eagles Live recording (Hotel California was better) the vocals were slightly veiled but had great soundstage projection, Celine Dion, John Williams,...+ Jamiroquai's 7days7nights (vocals were slightly veiled) U2's Beautiful Day, With/Without You.

So-so: noisy rock, ...(had a relisten to JK's tracks and had to retract it from this slot - it actually sounded really good on the HD598 driven through iPod unamped)... Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer" wasn't bad but may sound better with amping.

    Bad: when playing mediocre recordings...

This hp excels in invoking intimacy in quality recordings of vocal jazz & tenors, accoustics, audiophile recordings & great for HDtv shows eg UKTV The Bill (this happened to be on cable) the surroundsound effect eg brings to life ambient sounds within movie.

Detailed. Balanced. Wholesome (in my understanding of the term)

Where it falls short is where recording is not par excellence - may not be suitable to noisy rock subject to recording quality (perhaps this is where it needs amping).

I have another miCh HP coming - the closed AKG K271MKII (50%off) but what I really want is to get my hands on the love-it-or-hate-it AKG K702 or K701 that everyone sings about or thinks severely overrated. As for now, I am still getting a hang on what "coloured" "neutral" "balanced" "airy soundstage" sound like. And what amping potentially does to a pair of HP fr the iPod, iMac. Hv a pair of FiiOs E7/E9 on order, coming as well to see if there are further improvements to be had from the HD598, 271MKII...

I have heard that the HD598 is really just a modified version of the cheaper HD558 (with pads taken out) or a "dressed up vers" of HD595s (as some think) which are currently very steeply discounted & a real steal fr amazon - and since I have no comparison, can't verify if it's true. I hope this isn't true. I would hv EXPECTED Sennheiser to do better than that! I 'd loathe the idea that a lower end product at half the price (eg HD555) can be modded into a HD595 simply by removing a piece of foam, etc. If so, cosmetically, I think the current USD90-100 premium is not worth it HOWEVER, that said, the Senn HD598 is a great, fabulous pair of headphones & I have grown VERY fond of it overnight. And my head & ears are equally happy after hours on it (no puffs of air). Be nice if AKG would send me a pair of miAustria AKG K 702 for reference. How do these ppl get freebies?!

    Meanwhile...am off to more listening...
