This is my second headset. The first one quit working so I ordered a new one after new batteries in the headset didn’t help. I forgot to check the power input plug on the charger which had caused trouble before. But I had already chucked the old headset. Original headset may have have still been good.

Sound volume keeps dropping

I got on pair of headphones, and two charging stands, at a garage sale. The pair of headphones was very worn out, but worked quite well. I bought new earpads for it, and it functions very reliably. So I bought a second pair, to go with the second charger.

At first it seemed as good as the old one, but then I noticed the volume would drop, and I would have to adjust the tuning setting, or turn up the volume. But if I turned up the volume, it would then jump at random, and blast in my ears.

I think the problem is, it does not stay on frequency when you tune it; it needs periodic adjustments. I thought it might be one of the old charger stands/broadcasting stands that was at fault, but I experimented; the old headset worked well with boths stands. The new headset continued to go off frequency with both stands.

The return window has passed, otherwise I would return them. For the price, very dissappointing. The old pair works so well, but the newer ones seem to have quality control issues. I would not recomend them, or buy them again.

UPDATE 12/30/21: I've had more time to use them. The volume does go off, and need adjustment sometimes. But not all the time. I was comparing it to an older set I had, which seemed to work better. But I've been using them both, and they both need retuning from time to time. It's annoying when it happens, but they aren't unusable. So I've adjusted it up to four stars.

I find the on ear cushions become uncomfortable after a while. But for about $6.00, you can buy over-ear replacement pads, that are much more comfortable, and extend the wearing time by a lot.

We have used *many* RF headphones over the last 20 years, and for our purposes the Sennheisers have proven to be the best. That does not mean they are perfect. Our application is fairly simple - my wife and I use them to listen to TV. I need them to provide volume control for my deteriorating ears without blasting out others. She needs them so she can listen to TV while doing other things that often take her to other rooms in the house, or even outside. We do NOT use them to listen to music at all, so the ability to deliver clear dialogue is far more important than sound effects or cymbals.

This Sennheiser model is supra-aural, ie, it has flat surfaces that rest ON your ears. For most people this design keeps your ears cooler during long sessions than a circumaural design. Since I wear them a lot every day, I personally prefer this design. However, Sennheiser's implentation . . . flat, smooth ear pads combined with low tension . . . allows the headphones to fall off your head if you look down too far.

This model does not have automatic noise suppression, and I prefer this design as well. When something interferes with the signal (eg, too many walls, too much metal in the path, or too much distance), you will hear the static while the headphones continue to work. In Sennheiser's more expensive model with noise suppression, static causes the headphones to shut down. I'd rather hear the static than hear . . . beep beep.

OTOH, my wife prefers the more expensive models with the circumaural design, trading off the "noise suppression" for headphones that stay on her head. She's happy to adjust her location until the sound comes back on . . . so we use a mix of both types, sharing the same transmitter.

The range on these headphones is excellent, again compared to all other RF headphones we've used. 100' in open air is a very fair range estimate. However, the practical range is highly dependent on exactly what is between you and the transmitter. In one location we have trouble reciving a signal over 35' through a single wall containing Pella windows and sliding glass doors. In another, we get nearly 100' through one stucco exterior wall. Overall, these RF headphones perform at least as well and most often better than others have in our highly radio-frequency-noisy environment.

One final word of caution: With the industry's content protection paranoia, make sure your current audio source will output an audio signal these headphones can use, when and where you want to use them. Many TVs that formerly would allow headphone and TV-speaker use simultaneously will not allow that now. Also, the headphones will not accept a digital signal - you will need a digital to analog converter to get the "red and white wire" audio output you need for the transmitter. You can thank the Hollywood 1% for those changes :)

The 5-star rating is for use with TV in difficult environments compared to other RF heaphones.

This is an up-dated review. I have had the head phones now for a few months and thought I'd give a bit of feed-back. Great sound quality from a quality product. I've had Sennheiser products for many years and they never disappoint. We up-graded to the RS175 for our projector when we want to watch a big screen movie so we wanted the best headphones around, only thing is that they really surround the ear and you cannot hear outside, which for a movie is wonderful but not for everyday use. When we up-graded our 120s I went for the on-ear not the over ear, which proved to be a bit of a mistake as they kept falling off when you looked down. We persevered for a couple of months and then I thought I'd phone Sennheiser customer service and see what could be done. Well, they not only had a solution.......... but sent a set of over-ear replacement pads the next day.......... free of charge. This is what you get when you use a really first rate company.

I needed a replacement for an HDR 120 headset which had become pretty 'tatty' over four or five years of good use. The ear pads were worn and the on/off switch was not working properly. The transmitter however was functioning OK.

I considered a second 'clear sound' HDR 170 which was on the main TV but considered it too expensive and the one would interfere with the other if both sets were on at the same time - my wife watching something else. Replacement by another HDR 120 seemed the obvious choice.

The unit at £47 +- arrived quickly and I swapped the rechargeable batteries with the old set (mine are Nicad 1000 and longer lasting than those supplied with the headset). No rewiring required and cheaper than a complete unit.

The new unit seems to have been modified since the original in that it doesn't fall off the head - a frequent complaint in reviews. The old one was infuriatingly loose and fell off when cleaning my teeth or at any other time when bending over.

The 'phones' are not as clear as the 170's but the range is good and they do not cut out like the latter. They work through brick walls and wooden doors - no problem. For music buffs I wouldn't recommend as they are just not clear enough especially if one is a bit hard of hearing. They are adequate for TV sound. Be aware one needs a digital to analogue converter between an HD TV and the headphones or they will not work!

I was glad to be able to buy a replacement headset instead of forking out for a complete unit and compliments to Sennheiser for thinking of their customers future needs. Don't think other manufacturers supply spare sets.

I am most satisfied with the quality and performance of the headphones and with being able to get them from Amazon so conveniently and quickly. My only point is the price and I have duly knocked off one star.

Being partially deaf, I need to use a headset to listen to TV programmes without imposing excessively loud volume on other people. I bought one of the Sennheiser headsets a few years ago but it developed a crack in the earpiece which led to one earpiece coming adrift. I bought this one as a replacement and the design appears to be rather more robust than my earlier version so I am hoping it will last longer. I find the Sennheiser a good products for my needs. It may not meet the high standards required for music buffs but it meets my requirements admirably.

Completely transformed how I watch TV drama. My hearing is absolutely normal, but the dialogue in dramas is often hard to hear. I thought I was getting the headset to remedy that, but in fact it makes drama viewing so much better, as it makes it a completely immersive experience.
