Not perhaps the first mic to buy but a great option to go to
I used them for one of their most popular applications, Toms. They blew all of my other mics out of the water easily. I was using Shure 98's before just for the ease of use but most certainly was glad i did the extra work to get my hands on some of these. (I had to drive about an hour and a half to rent them)
The MD421's had a great presence and picked up a wonderful amount of the low end and ring that made my toms sound perfect. In fact when I began mixing I just through a little gate and compression on them and they sounded perfect. No EQ necessary.
Also, the built on low cut is a great way to sculpt your sound a little bit before even taking it to a DAW or mixing console. For me I used it to get rid of alot of the Kick and Low tom sound out of my high tom recording.
Another great application for this Mic is on a guitar cab. It gives a little more body to the sound than your average SM57.
I got super lucky and literally picked this guy up for about $75 from a local guitar shop that had just got a big trade worth of recording gear and Mics.
Overall, this is an incredible mic and well worth the cash.
Great on Drums, Bass cabs, Guitars, and even Vocals from time to time!
