So, after rebooting my search, I frequently came across the Sennheiser headphones. I had to visit their website for a product comparision chart to figure out the differences between their models and the "X" lines. It was clear that the MM 550-X was their top of the line offering. After bouncing back and forth between a lower-end model, I decided to just go with the MM 550-X.
I'm glad I did. These headphones are fantastic:
* Great sound without SRS enabled.
* Even better sound with SRS enabled!
* Noise Cancellation works well. It's effective in a noisey office.
* Battery life is great even with SRS and Noise Cancellation enabled (that'll get you 8 hours on continous play).
* Charging cable is the same Micro-USB cable I use to charge my SmartPhone
* No driver installation needed: Windows 7 auto-detected the headphones and all the compatible Bluetooth services
* Headphones are extremely comfortable and can easily be worn for long periods of time
* "Talk through" option works well and is very useful!
* Can be used wired and comes with an adapter to fit various headphone-input types.
* Bluetooth range is the best of any bluetooth device I've ever used.
* Comes with every power adapter available for recharging via wall outlet (great for international travellers)
One BIG plus to these headphones that I didn't initially notice on the specs was the fact that these headphones have a replacable battery. That should allow these headphones to operate for years and years, unlike my previous ones which were rendered useless as soon as the recharagable battery died.
So the big con to these headphones is obviously the price. I'd say it's completely worth it, considering the feature set, removable battery and great sound. If you work in a noisey enviornment and have to have good headphones to block out the sounds around you, it's a no brainer.
The plastic core of the headband can *BREAK* -- as mine did after ~3y, leaving them looser, but entirely functional. Post-warranty repair service was $149 (US), which for my case turned out to be a replacement with an entirely new box.
...I'm writing this detailed review now because, after another ~2y the headband has just broken a 2nd time <sigh>.
Compared to my tech coworkers, I'm clumsier & rougher than average on my portable electronics, and I live with these headphones on or hanging around my neck 14h/d, so YMMV.
(F/ex: my mobile phones always get the most drop-proof cases I can find (Ballistic TJ1660-A06N Tough Jacket Case for LG Nexus 5X released 2015 - Black) and still only last for ~12mo)
That said, I'd pick them over my wife's Bose QC-15's any day. They are equally comfy, llight (with battery 190g / 6.7oz), and unlike the QC-15s, they do NOT turn into a brick when the battery dies! In fact they work perfectly as wired headphones under ALL circumstances: power off, dead battery, battery removed, or even battery present & USB charging! You can even (!!) listen via Bluetooth (with or without noise cancelling) while the battery is USB charging IN the headset.
The included micro USB charger includes international plugs, but every USB charger that I have tried works fine too.
Bluetooth audio is clear & responsive, I haven't noticed any delay when watching video. Sound quality in calls is fine too. The phone call microphone is good, but in a noisy environment your caller won't hear you clearly -- in that case prefer just the phone handset. The microphone is Bluetooth only, so when using in wired mode there is no microphone.
Bluetooth pairs easily to multiple devices (Android phone, phone MacBook Pro , stereo) with no PIN. As usual with multiple BT devices, be sure to disconnect from the Mac's BT menu before you close the lid so that re-connecting to your phone is painless.
Noise canceling is good, but not as effective as the Bose QC-15. (Relatedly, the sound reproduction is more accurate than the QC-15s). Noise cancelling helps on a airplane, but I still need to turn up the volume to isolate myself from engine noise.
Caveat: I wear glasses, so for me the ear-cup seal is not perfect.
However, unlike most over-ear and all on-ear headphones I find the MM-550-x very comfortable with my glasses on all day.
Normal sound quality does not have the artificially inflated bass that's now common in "Beats" and other popular headphones.
And as audiophiles have noted (and I can notice with the right music), there is slightly better base reproduction over the cable, than BT with noise cancelling on. For me this is hard to notice & I did not notice it for years until I read about it in a quality review.
So, I'll probably pay for the post-waranty repair, it's much cheaper than replacing it with a comparable model, but if you're spastik like me, I suggest some other kind with metal headband.
