Before I talk about the pros and cons I just want to say that it really saddens me that Sennheiser are not able to get this PMX 600 Neckband series right. I have many products by Sennheiser and they really seem to know what they are doing in the sound and comfort department. But the PMX 600 neckband series have been average at best.
I own the PMX 680i & the PMX 685i and in short I will tell you how each one differs so you make up your mind on whether you want those are not.
PMX 680i (YELLOW): The first model of this series that was released a few years ago. The clamping force on them is very strong, and very very similar to this model. If you did not find the 680i's uncomfortable then you will love those since they are similar in comfort but have crispier and significantly better sound quality.
PMX 685i (BLUE): These are the second model of the series that came out. the clamping force on them is super weak and the earbuds keep falling out alot. The sound quality is nothing special. Very similar to the 680i. I think what happened is when many customers complained about the 680i's comfort sennheiser decided to released a newer model with the exact same quality in sound but with less clamping force in the ears. If you have a big head those are the only ones you will find comfortable out of the three models.
Now we look at the latest model, the 686i: The clamping force as I said above is almost exactly as strong as the 680i's. I have a big head so that is an issue for me if I want to wear it for long hours. The sounds quality is SIGNIFICANTLY better than the older models.
Now that I compared the latest model with the older models, I will list the pros and cons below so you can get an idea of how the product is:
- Fantastic improvement in sound
- very firm and doesn't move around once in position
- a breathable carry pouch which is good if you sweat alot (the last two models did not have a breathable carry pouch)
- tangle free cord
- great mic quality
- the play/pause button is popping out so answering calls and pausing music can be done without needing to look at the controller
- the extremely strong clamping force will make your ears soar if you have the headphones for more than 30 mins
- you will need the ear foams if you want these headphones to be less uncomfortable
All in all I mainly bought these headphones cause I have the previous PMX models and will continue to buy this series in the future to add to my collection.
In conclusion, these headphones are for you if you have a small head, otherwise you will need earfoams to reduce the discomfort.
I really hope the next model has the same sound quality and a slightly less stronger clamping force. Sennheiser can't seem to get that aspect of these headphones right. Maybe the 4th time will be a charm!
I hope this review was helpful.
The cord is shorter but it's nice that it's flat and tangle-free. I prefer it shorter anyway since I put my cell phone in an armband case. I have an LG V20 and the volume and track skip buttons on the cord work just fine.
All in all an improvement over the older model in my opinion.
