The connection that I used was TV digital audio out -> D/A Converter -> dedicated headphones. My current analog output goes to an amplifier for running through the big stereo speakers and I wanted to keep the two independent. Originally, someone recommended that I buy a Bluetooth transmitter and then buy a pair of Bluetooth headphones where there are more options. I tried this but the Bluetooth adapter wouldn’t connect to the headphones, and when I tried the headphones, they didn’t Isolate very well and the sound was mediocre. Plus this rig was more money than the Sennheisers. So I sent that stuff back and bought the Sennheisers.
My main concern was the quality of sound. I heard some wireless headphones many years ago and they sounded like crap. Like AM radio with all the hiss, etc. I own several pairs of headphones for music listening and some of them exceed $1000 in price. So I’m pretty picky and my expectations were high.
Do these sound like really expensive headphones? No. but they sound pretty darn good and there was ZERO background noise. I could hear all the low level details, and on one movie there were low level background noises that I actually thought for a moment were coming from my kitchen. My main complaint about the sound is that the top end is rolled off slightly so it doesn’t show the details with cymbals or other high frequency sounds. This would be a deal killer for me if they were for music, but for television and movies it’s not a big deal.
I find the comfort to be very good. I think my head is pretty average sized and they fit well. They isolate external noises pretty well also. Some have complained that the headband could use a little more padding but I don’t have a problem with it.
Two minor annoyances…First, Sennheiser should have included an RCA to mini cable. This will be used more than a mini-to-mini connection (in which they include a cable) but RCA to Mini cables can be bought for less than $1 in bulk. There is no good reason why Sennheiser couldn’t have included this. The other issue is the ergonomics of the volume up/down buttons. I’m not blind so Braille isn’t really my thing. The raised “+” and “-“ on the headset take some getting used to. A competent human factors team could have come up with a design that’s more intuitive.
I didn’t find the bass boost to be of much value. I don’t think the headphones are bass deficient, and the effect of the boost is a little unnatural. You don’t need it. A better approach would have been to make it a “loudness” button which along with a little bass would boost the highs a little also. Loudness is beneficial at lower listening levels if it’s implemented properly.
I thought it was a nice choice for Sennheiser to use rechargeable AAA batteries in the headset. I hate when companies use some obscure battery that’s hard to replace. This isn’t the case here. Also the manual recommends an initial charge of something like 14hrs. (going from memory) But I just pulled the batteries out and put them in my other battery charger for 2 hours and they were fully charged, so I could use the headset the same evening. I have yet to run these down mid viewing, including watching television for 6+ hours.
So although not perfect, this headset is still a really solid 4 star recommendation.
The good news I was right and these babies completely fixed the problem and the sound is much better and also have none of the faint background hiss that the old pair had. The 165 doesn't have a "surround" setting like the old one, but that was kind of a gimmick that I never used anyway. I also like the "positive connect" charger, even though it is somewhat large, as the old 120's "lay it on the charging bars" style was often hard to get a connection/charge going.
So what's not to like? Well, a few small things that are not deal breakers, but...
1. The old 120 had a mechanical on/off and volume controls so you had instant, direct control of the phones. These turn on and off with a 2 second push of the power button, which kind of sucks when you want to flip them off to mute commercials and then flip them back on to continue your show. The up/down volume paddles work better than I thought they would, but I still like an old-fashioned dial on a pot, even if, in theory, the wipers might get dirty and fail over time -- but I never had any trouble along these lines with the 120s so I don't think this is a problem.
2. These operate in the 2GHz band and the old 120s worked in the 900MHz band and the range on these is simply CRAP. I got used to being able to walk down the hall and to the bathroom with the old one ones on -- maybe 40-50 feet away with 2-3 walls in between, but the moment I leave the room these phones stop working. Now, I expect reduced range with the band switch -- even though TV audio is never going to need the extra bandwidth -- and I understand 900MHz is a garbage dump of baby monitors and stuff -- but, heck, my 5Ghz router can reach around our whole (1500 sq foot) house at 200-300MBit speeds, so I think the RS 165 simply have poor RF characteristics (bad antennas, matching, parasitic capacitance from my head, internal interference, bad case design, whatever..).
3. The cushions on these are this pleather stuff that, in my experience on other Sennheiser phones, lasts about 2 years before it starts to crack and fall apart -- the old phones had some fuzzy stuff that held up well for a decade. We'll well see how these do. The cups look to be easily replaceable though.

These new headphones take some getting used to, to operate the controls, but they are snug on the head.
It's the entry range, but still has Sennheiser sound quality (I've owned only Sennheiser wired headphones until very recently before taking the leap of faith over to a nice pair of ATs)
Better reception and interference immunity than my personal older analog pair (also from Sennheiser). But that's to be expected from digital modulation, which I'd say is comparable to all those wired Senn headphones I've owned in the past.
When my analog wireless set goes, I'll probably get myself a pair of these to replace them.
Comfort and isolation is decent too. If you have a house full of kids, don't expect complete tranquility. But if you just want to drown out the dishwasher for a bit of quality TV time, then these will suffice.
They've got nice big foam muffs which are comfortable at first, but like any headphone you'll find theres a point things become uncomfortable... for these it was about 2 hours for me.
As for battery life, I've never used them for more than a couple hours at one time, and then I put them right back on charger after.
So I can't really speak to how long battery will last.
The red charging light is a bit annoying on the front.
