- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2024Purchased for my mother for her birthday. She loves the film and Emma Thompson, so I knew she would enjoy the book. It's very interesting and has a lot of things in it I'd never heard about before and lovely pictures. It was bittersweet to see photos of Alan Rickman, whom we miss so much.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2018Emma Thompson's filming diary is delightful, and I read it all in one afternoon.
My goodness, Emma Thompson is an amazing blend of intelligence, humor, and capability -- or at least, that's how she comes across in this collection of her random thoughts while filming Sense and Sensibility (1995), which she not only starred in, but wrote the screenplay for. (And she won the Oscar for Best Screenplay, too!) If you're not particularly interested in how movies get made, you might not be too keen on this book, but I found it fascinating, hilarious, and informative. So many insights into the story and characters, so many incisive and wry comments about modern life as an actor, so many random and chuckle-inducing anecdotes.
However, a sprinkling of bad language and some casual mentions of sexual matters prevents me from universally recommending this book. Alas. I wish it was cleaner, because it's lovely overall.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2013Sense and Sensibility is one of my favorite movies and this book does not disappoint in providing the back story. Emma Thompson, who won an Academy Award for writing the screenplay, kept a diary before and during the filming. The diary is interesting and provides plenty of information on how the days progressed during filming and the interaction the actors had with each other. What it doesn't provide is any juicy tidbits or gossip - which is fine with me. In addition, the book contains the entire script although it is not the final, shooting script - but very close to it. There are photos interspersed throughout the book and I would have liked to have seen more photos - not from the movie, but photos of how they shot the movie which is why I didn't give this 5 stars. It's a quick read and after finishing it, I viewed the movie again knowing some of the back story.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2017Love this screenplay/book! Since I enjoy Sense & Sensibility the movie and have re-watched it many times, while reading the screenplay I could certainly see the scenes playing out. Emma Thompson richly deserved her Academy award for Best Adapted Screenplay on this one! I enjoyed the "diary" portion/half especially. Reading Ms. Thompson's daily musings, perspectives and anecdotes was very engaging, entertaining and a great behind-the-scenes look at how a movie is actually filmed vs the end product. There are no revolutionary "ah-ah's" but just a clear view of little, personal things that make the filming process interesting. I highly, highly recommend this book for anyone who loves the Sense & Sensibility story and an insider's perspective of making a film.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2009This is a wonderful read for anyone that loves this movie. It is a behind the scene look at the making of the movie by Emma Thompson. She includes many humorous stories involving the different actors that were in the movie.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2018I don't know how I missed this book when it was first published, but I'm so glad to have it now. I read it over the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. This is one of my favorite movies and Emma Thompson can do no wrong. I wish she would write more books. I know she's busy but she's so good.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2021Astounding hilarity in this stream of consciousness account of the back breaking efforts to bring Jane Austen’s “sense and sensibility” to the screen. Thompson writes in a most endearing manner and makes one feel as though the movie was made especially for them. No qualms about my purchase. Original script included!

Cliente AmazonReviewed in Spain on February 8, 20215.0 out of 5 stars Artículo de colección para fans

Exactly what is says it is, but I think I was hoping for a bit more info on the writing process.
Still, an interesting read.
