For my money, this is a great breakout title from a promising new author. The scope of his world demands sequels, so I'm looking forward to returning to the strange, cold world to see what comes next! As a matter of full disclosure, I assisted with proofreading Sentinel Code on a volunteer basis, and I was suitably impressed that I wanted to leave this review. This is my honest, unsolicited, opinion of the book.
As an avid reader, I love to find new authors and new series - can't wait for the next book in this one. As soon as I finished I immediately downloaded the free prequel (The Alchemist's Bane) and made short work of it also. It added even more depth to the story and had some great twists that will leave you trying to anticipate how the characters you came to love in Sentinel Code will handle the turns that will inevitably come at them. All that you want a good fantasy series to be.
This is NOT one of those fantasy stories.
The world-building is top notch, and you will lose yourself completely in the cold, cruel, vaguely Siberian landscape of Serovnya.
The brother-sister dynamic between Mikhail and Klara is a refreshing change from the farmboy-princess romances found in so many other fantasy stories and I look forward to seeing these characters develop across the books to come.
This is a great debut novel from a young author who is still learning his craft and who is undoubtedly going to get better and better. Jump on board now before everyone else does.
Disclaimer: I did receive a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review - and honestly, after reading I can say I would happily have paid for this book with no regrets.
