I have a few of these. In fact, I am going to buy another one. I use them to keep cash and small hand guns at home and in my office, so they are not laying around loose. The safe is then stored in lockable drawers. It serves the purpose. It works, and it works all the time. I never had any problem with opening and closing any of them.
The combo wheels are a little stiff, but I find that by rolling the numbers forward, they move quite easily. Moving the numbers backward can be stiff.
And yes the numbers are small, but readable. And if one can't assume the Z looking figure means 2, when it comes after 1 and before 3, then it's not a lock issue, it's an IQ issue.
I give this 5 stars because for $20, this product is "priced right."
Feb 2015 - update - all units still working fine after 2 years. They have not skipped a bit. I am buying another one. The only thing I wish is that they make a thinner version also.
If you are interested in this safe as a visual deterrant and not to actually keep your items protected then go ahead and purchase it. Otherwise, I'd suggest you save your money and buy something more secure.
This safe isn't. It's a ripoff at $40. I can only explain the current four star rating as due to fake reviews. Buyer beware.
Plus, they lie on their Amazon page, which says: "Safety starts with security. SentrySafe Compact Portable Safe is PRICED LOW! Safeguard firearms and other valuables with advanced technology!" Well, if you bother to lift up the cheap plastic gray insert on the bottom, you're greeted by a big fat red-and-white label that says: "Warning - This product is not intended for the secure storage of all materials. Items such as firearms, other weapons, combustible materials, or medications should NOT be stored in this unit."
Do you really need to know any more to not buy this product?
This thing is simply junk. Thankfully the return process is easy so it is already on it's way back. At $15 I thought about just throwing it away. There are several reviews that say "pretty good for $20" or "I wasn't expect Fort Knox". I get that but I can't see any reasonable use for this item.
In the attached picture, the box is actually locked. I am barely squeezing one side of the box and the other side pops open. Forget needing to pry with a thin knife or screwdriver. You could easily fit just about anything in there to pry it open or simply shake it to get out small items.
I have better quality safes in the cars to lock up weapons but I was looking for a small combination box to take on vacation to secure cash and passports in the room. This is not it.
Just do yourself a favor and don't even bother with it.
FYI gun vault makes a 300 model with a dial lock but the locking mechanism is held together with plastic pieces that can break. I didn't know this until having used one for 2 years. Mine broke unexpectedly and I saw the weak link of the system. The unit gives a much better perception of security than the SentrySafe (from the outside) but it is not a robust design if someone tries to get in. The Gun Vault keyed units (100 and 200) have all metal locking systems.
Just thought I would share since if someone is looking at this one they will probably check out the other one as well.
