I have an old 78 of this song, scratchy & evocative of an earlier time. Walter Huston was a wonderful actor, he sang this on Broadway years & years ago & he absolutely owns it. Certainly there are other excellent versions -- Jimmy Durante, Ella Fitzgerald, Willie Nelson -- but this is my favorite. It never fails to make me all melancholy (in the best way), & the older I get, the more it resonates. Best listened to in Autumn, as golden leaves fall outside the window & you sip a glass of good wine & remember all the people you've loved.
