Having read her Partner's two books, I was interested to read Lorna Penfold's perspective on their experience of moving from England to Spain, to raise Alpacas. I was intrigued to discover how someone who had owned a dance studio for many years, might adapt to living in a run down olive mill with the mud, mess and aromatic aspects of farming animals in Spain. With no great farming experience in general and certainly none in breeding Alpacas, (not forgetting all the other animals that ended up residing at The Olive Mill), Lorna proved that in spite of everything, she is a survivor. She willingly shares her thoughts, struggles and emotions with the reader. It is impossible not to become engrossed in this story, experiencing her highs, her lows and everything in-between. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading about her second and subsequent years of life at The Olive Mill.

An Interesting Adventure in Spain

After reading both of the author's partner's books, I enjoyed reading about their wild and wacky adventures from the female perspective. I can't decide whether I liked the dog tales or the alpaca stories the most. I enjoyed reading about all of the animals and their misadventures. Lorna tells the story so well. I could envision poor Alan trying to drag an unwilling dog into the car and up the stairs at the vet clinic on many occasions. The book does include quite a few sad moments in the process of raising alpacas. I learned more interesting facts about alpacas by reading this book. I highly recommend this well written book to anyone who has an interest in alpacas, dogs, or living in Spain.

Wonderful and memorable. FIVE STARS!!!!!

This book consists of the blog written by Lorna Penfold of the first year she and her partner, Alan Parks, spent in Spain after moving there from Brighton. Lorna had been a dance teacher but she was finding continuing her career more and more difficult due to being diagnosed with Sarcoidosis. They decide to uproot to Southern Spain and try a new venture breeding alpacas. Now, I have read Alan's account of this, entitled 'Seriously Mum, What's An Alpaca?' and absolutely brilliant it is too! I noticed Lorna had also written a book so I bought it soon after but I had quite a gap in reading it after reading Alan's, thinking it might duplicate quite a bit. I couldn't have been more wrong. Decided to have a quick dip in it the other day and soon became totally addicted and read it in one day bar a few hours. It's nice easy reading, Lorna's bubbly and lively personality really comes across. It is often quite humorous and includes a generous amount of pictures and very good they are too. It seemed a little bit briefer than Alan's book but a very worthwhile read anyway, even if you have read 'Seriously' it gives another dimension to the couples' story. I am pretty sure that photos were absent in Alan's book so it's useful to see all the pictures of allsorts of things in this one. The book's structure is a mixture of Diary Format (January, February etc) but with each month having a few sub-headings/titles for things that are happening at the time. Lovely clear photos mixed in with the text. As well as some lovely humorous writing there are also some very traumatic times, some very powerful scenes, I had tears in my eyes reading some of them. It was amazing how it all still got to me again as I've already read Alan's account of many of the same circumstances. This book is told from Lorna's point of view so there are some differences, it still kept my attention and was addictive, not 'samey' at all. What a wonderful book, laughter and tears. Year one. I'm looking forward to year two Lorna-hope you are writing it now!

Lorna's Point of view

I have read her partner's books, so it is a pleasure to read her view of their amazing journey from her life as dance school owner and teacher to sunny Spain and a new life. She has amazing fortitude facing the challenges in this rural area trying with limited success raising alpacas.
She honestly shares her heartaches and frustrations as well as the joy of their successes. I'm looking forward to her next book!

A well written bloggy memoir

Lorna writes with an easy fluidity as she related her move from Brighton UK to the Alpujarras (in rural Andalusia, Spain) to breed alpacas, with her husband (Alan Parks) and her daughter. Their adventures (and misadventures) are told with humour and candour. By the time you reach the end of the book you really feel that you know Lorna, and would love to meet up with her.

I have read both of Lorna's partner's books (Alan Parks) about their move to Spain so I knew their story but I very much enjoyed Lorna's perspective of it all. This is a nice read about their trials, tribulations and successes. What a lifestyle change these two made and I'm sure their friends and family are very proud of what they have done. This is a great book for anyone who enjoys learning about places off the beaten tourist path. I have a much clearer idea of life in Spain now. It is also a wonderful book for any animal lover. Lorna's love for the animals that wander into their lives comes alive in her stories. You'll share her sorrow of the losses and her joy of the lives of others. I highly recommend this delightful book.

I had been following her blog so was pleased to see a book of their first year, I would call it stressful, in Spain. New country, new house, huge new dogs, raising Alpaca's--easy peavey--oh yeah, I forgot about the car. I don't know ow they afforded it all, including several trips back to the UK. They did it, now let's hope the second year goes better and the excitement is all good!!
