BEST APPRECIATED AS A WORK SEPARATE FROM A GREAT BOOK
Serena is a film adaptation of a book by Ron Rash. Despite the distinctively harsh period of the Great Depression, this is a somewhat romantic period for American audiences to look back on through the medium of film. Whether it's the classic automobiles, the process of rebirth after financial collapse, or the creation of new empires out of dirt and hard work, it captivates us. Serena is a tale of two people who understand each other, coming from similar backgrounds. They are utterly devoted to each other against all consequences, and utterly devoted to their vision of empire. It's not so simple or base as greed alone. It's the dream that drives them. They will find that dreams can be vulnerable no matter how strong you are.
THE PLOT (no spoilers): George Pemberton (Bradly Cooper) is a logging magnate working land in the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina. It's post stock market crash in 1929 and his funding sources are in question as he also fights to stave off a push to turn the region into a national park. As he works to roll over his loans, he is forced to put up his second holdings down in Brazil as collateral. The Carolinas are just a means to an end, while Brazil is his true dream. Now both are in jeopardy. Against this backdrop, George meets an extraordinary young lady, Serena (Jennifer Lawrence) whose parents ran a logging company in Colorado, but were killed in a fire. He wins her love and they become almost obsessively devoted. They are two halves of the same heart. Serena proves that she is extremely capable of running a logging operation herself and is treated as partner in the operation. Her abilities will inspire devotion from some workers, and jealousy from George's other partner. What's more, George has certain unexpected obligations from his life before Serena. It is a struggle with a successful logging operation set against ever rising enemies to their happiness. In the end, it's a test to see how far each will go to protect their mutual dream.
OTHER THOUGHTS: The production values are excellent and the story is mostly gripping. The performances also are quite excellent. The only thing that holds the film back are perhaps a few very quick plot advancements that require the personalities of the characters to change. I am certain there was a need to fit a whole lot into a normal run time. However, the feel of the significant developments can seem a little abrupt and unsupported. Many professional critics were a lot more harsh than my description. I would have liked to see them develop those transitions just a little more for an even greater film. However, unlike professional critics, I didn't feel it ruined the film by any means and the story itself was very interesting. I really appreciated the performances and the setting is just beautiful (transitions might make the actors look awkward at times, I don't think that was their fault). If you can forgive some minor imperfections and departures from the book, you may really enjoy this film. If you cannot accept departures from the book, it may not meet your tastes as you can see from reviews. I suggest a rental first.
I loved this movie. Bradley Cooper's acting was on point, he has a way of becoming his character that I forget I am watching Bradley Cooper on screen. It wasn't my favorite performance of Jennifer Lawrence, but by mid movie to the end of the movie I started to like her more as Serena. Because she started to become Serena.
It started off sweet and romantic and took a turn as the plot played out. Not because any of the characters you love are actually evil, but because life sometimes happens not as you planned. The heartache and pain you see feels real.
I highly recommend you watch the film, especially if you haven't read the book because it seems most of the lower reviews are fans of the book.

A voir vraiment.
