About the Author

Dr. Neil Bradley Hampson is a retired physician, entering the field of book authorship directed at the non-medical reader for the first time with Serial Chase. The book centers on the true story of the murder of his own grandfather by a serial killer. After a career in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine, Dr. Hampson retired from clinical practice in 2010. He has extensive experience writing nonfiction, having published over 100 scientific papers and book chapters in the medical literature. His special interest in medical research is carbon monoxide poisoning. At one point in time, he was ranked by a biomedical website as the number one ranked expert on carbon monoxide poisoning in the world. Among those familiar with his career, Dr. Hampson's investigative abilities are well known. He has a reputation for disproving common misbeliefs in medicine, successfully searching the historical record for the origin of such myths. He applies those investigative skills maximally as he uncovers the occurrences and makes the connections described in Serial Chase. A list of the author's biomedical publications can be found via a PubMed search through the National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed. Dr.Hampson is married and has two daughters. He and his wife spend part of the year in Arizona and the remainder on an island in Puget Sound in Washington State. .

Neil Hampson’s first book provides a fascinating twist on a real life murder mystery that had been swept under the carpet for decades. Serial Chase delves into the murderer’s psychological background and criminal history in chilling detail. The author has meticulously researched the background of this story and the result is a gripping page-turner that provides troubling insights about the mind of a killer and the serious flaws of the criminal justice system and the psychiatric profession in the 1950’s and 60’s. Well-written and thought-provoking, Serial Chase is an excellent read and is highly recommended.

Neil Hampson's chronicles the life of a serial arsonist and murderer who just happens to have murdered his grandfather. His research on this topic was excellent and better yet it read very well. The book held my interest and helped me understand how the 50's judicial system had failed society. The writing style held my interest in humanizing both the victims and the criminal. I have to congratulate the author in documenting the truth and not holding back on anything, even if it might damage reputations.

This narrative follows the anti- social life of a psychopath who was able to talk, charm, cajole, and lie to law enforcement, avoiding prosecutions and appropriate jail time. The author outlines the numerous failed opportunities where the perp should have been taken out of society. Blame is shared by prosecutors, parole boards, healthcare providers, and government bureaucracy. He also entertains that the criminal behavior could have been unleashed by a traumatic brain injury. The story is compelling. The chronology of events would be enhanced by including a time-line graphic. Overall this true story is entertaining and an eye opener. I recommend it to readers who enjoy crime investigations and all that entails.

This fascinating story of how a serial killer almost got away with murdering a man who was well-known in his community and very popular is a winner. Equally interesting is how his grandson, a physician, relentlessly tracked down the story and created this exceptionally readable account. Once I started reading I couldn't stop!

Neil Hampson (my brother) provides a glimpse of life in the "good old days", when life not so long ago, was simple, but lacked the record keeping and communication of today, and a serial arsonist and killer could easily move from various positions of authority and protection, killing and burning along the way, while duping victims and society of his innocence and good character. Even when incarcerated or placed in mental institutes and hospitals, record keeping was so poor, the killer could lie and cheat his way back to freedom for more crimes of horror. Through an access to knowledge that few others can obtain, with a meticulous and analytical search for accuracy and detail, Dr. Hampson not only places you in a time gone by, but also brings out the dark truth of a very mentally ill man in a trusting society. For anyone that wants to see a darker side of "the good life" gone by, or get a deeper look into the life of a sociopath, this book is highly recommended.
On a personal note, I loved it for the family history, much of which I had never known.

Neil Hampson did an excellent job intertwining the true story of his Grandfather's death at the hands of a serial killer and providing insight into some of the unique history of Seattle and the surrounding area. Having lived most of the past 59 years in Washington State I too was able to learn some things about the area that I was unaware of before reading this book. The history piece is certainly a backdrop to the main attraction of this book, a well documented and researched account into the life and mind of a serial killer and how it touched the life of the author and his family.

This book offers the interesting story tying together the authors' personal family history and how it crossed paths with a serial criminal, in the setting of Pacific Northwest history. An easy read, hard to put it down, and fascinating story of how someone can slip through the cracks of the criminal justice system. The recorded interview with the serial murderer and arsonist is almost hard to believe - a fascinating glimpse into the mind of one person who had taken so many lives and livelihoods.

If you are looking for quick romantic story to read before drifting off to sleep, this is not your book. I started reading it and couldn't put it down. The the transcripts from the prison interviews are chilling. This is a sad but true story of a doctor with a mysterious life, a deputy with twisted mind, and an author obsessed with finding the facts of the case decades later. A must read.
