Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Serious Sam 3: BFE is a glorious throwback to the golden age of first-person shooters where men were men, cover was for amateurs and pulling the trigger made things go boom. Serving as a prequel to the original indie sensation, Serious Sam: The First Encounter, Serious Sam 3 takes place during the Earth’s final struggle against Mental’s invading legions of beasts and mercenaries. Set against the collapsing temples of an ancient civilization and the crumbling cities of 22nd century Egypt, Serious Sam 3 is an exhilarating fusion of classic twitch shooters and modern gameplay features.

NO COVER. ALL MAN.

FEATURES

  • Frantic Arcade-Style Action – Hold down the trigger and lay waste to a never-ending onslaught of attackers or face being overrun by Mental’s savage beasts. No cover systems, no camping – it’s just you against them. All of them.
  • Fearsome Enemy Creatures – A new battalion of unforgettable minions including the rumbling Scrapjack and towering Khnum join the legendary Headless Kamikaze, Gnaar and Sirian Werebull to create the fiercest opposition you’ve ever had the pleasure of mowing down.
  • Spectacular Environments– Battle across the expansive battlefields of near-future Egypt bursting at the seams with total chaos. The shattered cities of tomorrow lined with the crumbling temples of an ancient world become your destructible playground.
  • Destructive Arsenal – Unleash Serious Sam’s arsenal of weapons including a scoped assault rifle, the double-barreled shotgun, the explosive automatic shotgun, the punishing minigun, and the almighty barrage of flaming cannonballs! Carry all of Sam’s weapons at once and switch between each gun on the fly for maximum firepower.
  • Brutal Melee Attacks – When the going get’s tough, the tough take matters into their own hands! Rip out the eye of a closing Gnaar, twist off the face of the hideous Scrapjack or snap the neck of an Arachnoid Hatchling for an instant kill.
  • Co-Op Chaos – Go to war against Mental’s horde with up to 16 players online and annihilate everything that moves across 12 levels of mayhem. Try to survive wave after wave of enemies in the relentless Survival mode or go on a monstrous safari in Beast Hunt mode!
  • Pure Multiplayer Mayhem – Drop the gauntlet and let the heavy ordinance fly in incredible versus modes like Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Last Team Standing and My Burden. This is the next level of Serious Sam multiplayer and all hell is about to break loose!
  • Split Screen Modes – Huddle up with split screen co-op and multiplayer versus modes with up to four players on one screen. Hey, stop looking at my screen!

This game looks fantastic, like the first two games, Serious Sam - The First Encounter, and Serious Sam - The Second Encounter. I played those games to death. Serious Sam the 2nd (actually the third game) was a huge let down for me. It had good graphics and had a long playing time, but I got very bored and never finished it - unlike finishing the first two games dozens of times, and never getting bored. It was just TOO cartoonish and I got sick of hundreds of clowns on unicycles coming at me. It was too tedious after a while.

I have played this game for a few days now, and it looks great and plays like the first 2 games, which is exactly how I like it.

I have a 5 megabit/second DSL account and it took me 2 hours and 10 minutes to download, not bad.

Now the bad news and I did not make this a part of the review. But going thru Steam was not fun. I spent way more time trying to connect to Steam than downloading the game. First off I could not activate my original account I set up years ago. It first seemed to have a little problem with my password, but the real problem was those captcha programs. I could not get the captcha to work (actually they just kept asking me to put in another) so I finally gave up and set up a new account with Steam. When doing so I received several error codes. There were several other problems but I will not expatiate on this anymore, but to just to say it was frustrating. I am sure I was doing some of the things wrong, but I do not know what.

I highly recommend this game, especially if you like the original Serious Sam games.

Edit 5/8/2012:
I have been playing this game for a month now, still love it. I read someone's review stating he felt it was more of a "cleanup operation" and I have thought about this. I think he is right, it does have that feel more than the first 2 games. But then again, are not most shooters "cleanup operations"? Still a very fun game!

Edit 8/12/2012...Horrible conclusion though. Boss is un-killable until you do these things in this correct order.
I hate endings like this:
* Find unique one-of-a-kind boring object(s)
* Do something to final boss with this object (and in correct location)
* Repeat numerous times...(i.e. tedious)
* Now boss is weak, kill him
* Blah!

If your're looking for a deep, intricate story line (most 10-year olds would probably find the plot on the banal side), game play that tests your ability to apply logic and reason, or compelling characters faced with important decisions that you must make which will dictate how they evolve throughout the game, then look elsewhere. If you want auto-regenerating health, intelligent AI or even a lot of variety in settings and opponents, this will probably come up short.

If you want a balls-to-the-wall, adrenalin-filled, eye-hand coordination-testing romp through hundreds of foes and the ability to tote an improbably massive arsenal of satisfyingly potent weaponry, this is the game to beat.

Sadly, due to the fact that most FPS we get today on the PC are at least designed with console compatibility in mind, the actual FPS component tends to be watered down and often requires minimal skill. To be good at Serious Sam 3, on the other hand, you actually need to have some FPS skills - an all too rare phenomenon in today's titles.

Graphics are also pretty good and the engine seems to perform well, even on mid-range hardware.

One star off for how repetitive the game can get in some parts (both in setting and in enemy tactics)

I've been FPS gaming since the first Doom and Heretic. It seems that now for a game to succeed, it has to push the envelope in every way. The new merging of FPS and RPG modes makes me long for the golden days of brainless fun. This game fills that void and then some. It's not really THAT brainless either. When your confronted by hoards of baddies, you need a strategy or your gonna get creamed. The graphics and background music blend perfectly. Personally, after a bad day at the office, sometimes I don't want to think too much. This game allows you to forget your bad day by just trying to survive the frenetic game play. It does get really hard at times but those are few and far between. You can't beat the price too.
Just turn down the lights, turn up the sound, and have a good time.

I waited for this game to drop in price and I still feel like I overpaid. This is lazy game making at its purest. Look, I know the series, Serious Sam was first created as a throwback to FPS shooters where the only tactics you needed was running and gunning but at some point you want to move the series forward. Serious Sam 3 has some of the laziest gunplay of the series with some of the most boring weapons you'll find in a shooter. Another little annoying aspect of the game is if you manage to catch yourself in the losing side of a fire fight Auto Save will Eff you UP by saving right at the moment when you're surrounded by bad guys. So when you load/respawn before you can even control your guy you are DEAD forcing you to load the previous save which means the wave you already completed...again..lazy game making. The graphics are dull and uninspired, level design is pathetic. Serious Sam used to be this wild nutty ride full of imagination. Duke Nukem Foreever is actually a better game than this crap and THAT game was HORRENDOUS so yeah, that's the level of bad this game is.

Bought this game based on the reviews but was disappointed. Graphics are whatever, game play nothing new. Not really challenging. Not really worth the money in my opinion.

The game was ok for an fps but I hate having to invoke Steam to play it. What ever happened to just getting a CD, downloading it, and then start playing it. If you have to register it one time on line that's ok. I wish they would go back to gtames like Serious Sam II. Now that was a great game.
