About the Author

John W. Welch is the Robert K. Thomas Professor of Law and Editor-in-Chief of BYU Studies at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He studied as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at Oxford University and is a member of the Jewish Law Association. In the Society of Biblical Literature, he has served on the steering committee of the Section on Biblical Law and as chair of the program unit on Latter-day Saints and the Bible.

Welch's book looks at one of the most important texts in world history, Jesus' "Sermon on the Mount" in the light of Jewish liturgy and temple ceremonies. He puts forward a convincing and well argued thesis which, if true, is ground breaking as it not only provides the first coherent, unifying theory for the Sermon, but represents a paradigm shift in our understanding of early Christian beliefs and their Judaic context.

Welch is a Latter-day Saint (Mormon) but does not write this book as a Latter-day Saint, nor does he write it for a Latter-day Saint audience. This book represents the best of academic Biblical research and is best suited for an academic reader. The average Latter-day Saint interested in this topic may wish to read the more accessible Illuminating the Sermon at the Temple & Sermon on the Mount: An Approach to 3 Nephi 11-18 and Matthew 5-7 (FARMS 1998) which is also by Welch. That being said, "The Sermon on the Mount In the Light of the Temple" has been hailed as "possibly the most significant contribution to Biblical studies by a Latter-day Saint author ever."

This volume could not possibly garner higher recommendations: 5 Stars all around.

John W. Welch is a giant. The evidence he garners for his thesis varies in strength, depending on which part of the Sermon he is trying to ground into temple worship. Much of the Sermon is derived from Psalms, which the consensus acknowledges was written by a temple priest. But overall, we have a smoking gun: The disparate sayings of the Sermon can be unified when seen as a temple ceremony.

This may be the author who (finally) came up with the unifying essence of the most important instruction within Christianity. For the religiously-inclined person, who wants to dig deeper, this book puts forth a very interesting viewpoint. With this book, The Sermon on the Mount begins to make sense as a whole. The author has obviously thought about this for a long time, and I found it personally satisfying.

The Sermon on the Mount in the Light of the Temple is one of the most learned, well-researched works on the New Testament that I have ever read. I was hooked by the first chapter. The author demonstrates that Jewish listeners of the first century A.D. must have interpreted Jesus' teachings of the Sermon on the Mount in terms of temple principles, personal worthiness and sacred covenants. In this book one learns how the temple helped Jesus' followers to make further commitments to become His disciples and become members of His church. It answers many contemporary polemical questions about early Christianity and is a "must read" for all Christians.
