romantic series. These heroes are everything I want to read and more.
Rune was amazing and so patient with Carling. Everything I thought I
knew about this centuries old vampire was not even close to reality.
The twists and turns had me in fits. I did the audio version and
everything about it was spot on. Towards the end I switched to reading
just so I could finish at home. I was head over heels for these
characters and swooning and crying happy ever after tears. I am so
ready for the next one.
So glad in a lot of ways that I waited to read this brilliant author because I'd die waiting for the next release. She's just perfect.
“If you die, I will find you.
I will never leave you.
I will never let you go.
I will not let you fall, or fail.
I will always come for you if you leave, always find you if you're lost.
In the first two books, Rune was such an alpha male, strong, opinionated, and loyal. His Wyr form is a gryphon, the body of a lion, the head and wings of an eagle. He is one of four gryphons of the Earth. They along with three other raptors are the sentinels, to the Wyr leader Dragos. Rune was Dragos first. He and Dragos have been best friends for centuries.
In book two, to save the life of his friend and fellow sentinel, Rune promised to go to the Vampyre sorceress to do a favor of her choosing. So when he gets the summons to appear before Carling, he's hoping for a simple task so he can quickly return to his duties.
Carling is the former queen of the Nightknid. She has given up her title to one of her progeny, Julian. Carling is old even for a Vampyre. She has started dying. Having "fading episodes". So she turned over her demesne, and has secluded herself so she doesn't injure anyone during one of her episodes.
Rune arrives, she quickly dismisses him, and he sees for himself just how far she has slipped. He wants to help her.
And that is pretty much all that happens in the plot of the story. The two of them trying to figure out how to save her life. Rune is able to slip into several "episodes" from Carlings human past, and in doing so changes things in the present. Things that affect the other three gryphons and that scare the other vampyres.
Carling is a cold, cruel, unemotional woman. And what Rune sees in her? I have no clue. There was no real spark between them. The romance felt forced. It was a very difficult book to read. It was so slow, I found myself, skipping sections, looking for something interesting to happen. And Rune throwing away his friendship with Dragos over a conversation that Rune refused to give all the information to him was absurd.
I'm hoping the next story is better.
