Combined with a Zoom H4n for example, you can now record high quality sound directly through your camera. Place the Zoom or other audio recorder on the hot shoe with a hot shoe adapter (uses the 4/20 screw mount on the back of your Zoom to connect it to the hot shoe.) plug this into the zoom and then the camera and then jack in some headphones. Pre-roll your sound to get the levels right and then go about recording as you normally would!
I've found that I'm more certain and confident in the sound I get which makes for better overall videos as well.
If you want even better sound security, use a second recorder with an XLR microphone and then just sync your audio in post!
Great little product!
However, -25dB isn't really enough. That may just be the 7D's fault, but overall I still have to change levels in FCP to even out the sound or else the recording in the 7D is way too loud. Now, I could just lower the out from the H4n but that affects my headphones. But overall, it works.
This works terrifically well. The audio quality I am getting, right into the camera now, is terrific. I use a 10 foot extension cable for the stereo mini to stereo mini (bough a good quality one: KabelDirekt (15 feet) 3.5mm Male > 3.5mm Female Stereo Audio Extension Cable - PRO Series) and am using these settings on the ZOOM:
Low cut: On (likely not matter a lot here)
Auto level: OFF (critically important)
Rec Format: I have on MP3 at high bit rate but this does not matter cause this audio is not needed and don't even need to press record (unless I want a back up of the audio, but the whole point is not to have to sync better quality audio, so who cares!!)
Now, the most important part:
Input Level (rocker on right side of Zoom H1): at 70
Output volume (rocker on left side of ZOOM H1): at 60
It sounds gorgeous. Totally works and I am happy.

A bit pricey for what you get, but it works exactly as described. I had a splitter on my H4N that I attached a headphone volume control (to lower the level) which worked okay, but... Read morePublished 4 months ago by Guy Smith
