I was very wary of buying this product with all the negative comments. But I was glad I bought it. For the complain that the product is very cheap, light, and easily damaged...it has to be light so as to make it easier for it to fly off. You have to be careful in openning the lantern itself. It is made of very thin paper-like material that somewhat resists fire. If you happen to make a small tiny tear by forcing to open the lantern, it is still ok. Once the lantern is unwrapped, I held the wire to raise and lower the lantern quickly so air would help in further openning the lantern. I did this with the lantern upside down. The wire loop in the middle goes in the middle of the square fuel that already has a hole in the middle. Once in, part the loop wires and press it against the fuel to make sure it holds the fuel in place. We used a handheld propane torch to light up the fuel with bursts of fire and it immediately fills the lantern and puffs it up. Two people should do this. One to hold the top of the lantern up and the rim at the bottom, and one to light up the fuel with the torch. I accidentally would make tiny tears of the lantern when I open it. It still worked and flew off. As for the smell, the fuel didn't smell good but all fuels don't smell good. I didn't open it inside the house as it is meant for outdoors. When openned outdoors, I didn't really notice the fuel smell unless I put it near my nose. Will buy more for future use. Just used it yesterday for the 4th of July. Just be careful in unwrapping them. Again yes it is very thin because it has to be....in order to FLY. Using the torch made it easy to have the fuel fully lit. It took us approximately 15-20 seconds in making the lantern flight ready.

Better than expected !

I ordered these lanterns in a pinch for a party, and this seller was the only prime seller I could find for this product. After reading the reviews I was concerned, but out of options. If you follow directions and carefully unwrap them, all should be ok. I used only 4 of the 10 so far, but all four of them worked.

I was a little hesitant to buy these after reading the reviews, but they worked great! As long as you actually read the directions and are careful when pulling them out of the packaging they work really well! Really fun and different activity for a date night of for a family activity.

When they first arrived they seemed fine. Once you open the package it becomes clear that they are not as good quality as other lanterns. Many of them had seems that were not even glued together and we had to tape them with scotch tape. They were extremely fragile to the point that the tore at the slightest resistance. Even just unfolding them caused them to rip at points. I would suggest purchasing ones that might be a little more expensive but better quality.

Don't Ever Buy

We ordered these to honor my brother's would be graduation from high school, five months after he unexpectedly passed away. We read the positive and negative reviews first, but we were hoping if we followed the directions exactly, we could get them to work. We chose to buy these, instead of potentially better expensive ones, because we are on a tight budget. Needless to say, we were extremely broken hearted. We followed what the very little and hard to understand directions said as best as we could, but all the negative reviews are right. Do not buy this product. Ever. Save yourself the money and the heartache.

The kids were amazed at how far it went

After reading customer reviews I was skeptical to buy this product. We used them as a way to celebrate the life of our two foster children's dad and the two we used worked perfectly. The kids were amazed at how far it went. No problems with tears or not burning. I think user error causes the bad reviews more than the product. I do say the instructions on the packaging could be more clear. I went online to find a howto to ensure proper handling and usage. I would recommend this product!

No so much...

Well, one was ripped, one was stuck together and two caught on fire. So that left 6. One of those got so hot the latern detatched from the ring before it lifted off. So, now 5. By this point I let 3 off and tossed the remaining ones due to the ones in the air catching fire. Sometimes you get what you pay for. These cheap ones we're poo and the $6 each ones we're amazing.

Well.... These are terrifying. We used ONE. I couldnt get it to light and then I thought the paper was going to catch on fire. Once we actually got it IN the air, it hovered so low I worried about it landing somewhere and causing a fire. I have tried many other kinds of these and they take 3-4 minutes to fill with hot air and then rise WAY up into the night sky.... I will not be using the other 10 of these.... So disappointing. Wish I could send them back.
