The Pilot Parallel is a major breakthrough in calligraphy pen design.The "Parallel" nib consists of two parallel plates, allowing the writer to create much sharper lines than with other calligraphy pens. It can also create gradated colors by transferring ink from one pen nib to another, allowing two different ink colors to then be used from one pen nib. The set of 4 pens includes 1 each of the 1.5 mm, 2.4 mm, 3.8 mm and 6.0 mm nib sizes. Excellent pens, and long lasting. Really good product.

I love these pens for practicing several hands of calligraphy. I find these pens to be very durable. Unlike a regular chisel tip pen, the ink is delivered from between two metal plates, so the ink flow is very wet and it takes a light touch to create the distinct thin and thick of several calligraphy styles. I'd recommend these pens be used with a pen & ink pad that has little to no bleed. I've been using the "green" and "orange" pen for about 5 years, without a change in performance.
I purchased this new 4 pen set to get more of the various sizes. This pen has a consistently free flow of ink and is very easy to clean. Only thing I'd change is to build this pen so that you can put the cap on the end and that there be a 5.0mm size between the 2.4 - 6mm size. This is a great "quick draw" pen set you can just keep inked and ready to write/practice calligraphy. I would purchase these pens again if needed.(The photos show a sample of each pens size.)

These are fantastic. I've been doing calligraphy for longer than I can remember. I've had many fountain pen nibs specially ground to italic so I'd have the convenience of a fountain pen. This is a game changer. These are as close as anything I've ever seen to italic dip pens. You may not need all four sizes, but if you have them you'll find a way to use them. It's nice to get converters so you're not messing with cartridges all the time, but the 6mm nib blows through ink fast so you might want to consider turning the barrel into the ink reservoir and filling it with an eyedropper. An O ring and some silicone grease and you're home free.

Sadly the packaging is not the one shown here, NOR the contents!!! UNTIL NOW THESE WERE MY NEW FAVORITE PENS, I have been a Calligrapher for decades and these have been amazing- But PILOT changed the contents and package; it NO LONGER INCLUDES THE CONVERTER. So you cannot load the pen to use any other ink than the 2 included ink cartridges. the CONVERTER HAS BEEN REPLACED with a large blue squeeze tube for washing the nib??? WHY???? I have been using these since they came out and absolutely LOVED THEM, but now in order to use any other color ink you need to go and BUY Converters; PLEASE PILOT INCLUDE THE CONVERTER AGAIN!!! I will immediately purchase more. For now I have returned the sets I purchased- these are the pens I used everyday.

Quality pens and well worth the price.

Since I usually use these as dip pens, the included ink cartridges are not really needed.
The packaging I got is different from the Amazon photo above.
A squeeze bulb is included with each pen (for cleaning purpose?)
The bulb is covered by the packaging and can't be seen from outside.
No converters are included.
If a converter is needed, use the Pilot CON-40 converter for these pens.

I like:
These pens come with quality nibs which are smooth and versatile. And most importantly, they got my job done.
Easy to disassemble and clean (no tools needed).
Well worth the price.

I don't like:
Pilot don't sell the nibs alone.

I hope Pilot would offer more nib sizes in future.

Pens Leak and Ink Bleeds

I was somewhat disappointed in my purchase of these pens. My initial issue was that two pens with the same size nibs were originally sent. Once that was resolved, and I could try the pens, I found that the ink bled and feathered into the paper. The ink also bleeds through standard copy paper. It wasn't until I went to a cardstock that I began to see only minimal bleed through. The ink does take a little bit to dry so I had to be careful not to smear it.

Another issue I am having is that a couple of the pens leak ink by the nib (see image). No matter how many times I have cleaned it, the pen continues to leak. I have used the Pilot ink exclusively designed for this parallel pen.

Wonderful Calligraphy Set!

Well I dream about being able to write beautifully. And then I wake up and I see my terrible calligraphy lol. These pens, if you hold them at the right angle, are even great for the beginningest of beginners. I felt like I made a pretty letter on my first try almost. It comes with a tiny little instruction pamphlet that has been more helpful to this beginner than the calligraphy books I have purchased. No kidding! (see picture!) The pamphlet has six different calligraphy styles for you to try- along with fun little examples. I really like that little book! It also comes with both black and red coloring, as well as this little weird tube thing for cleaning out the tip. it's a great little set for beginners! five stars for sure! One of my least regrettable impulse purchases lol. Gah Bullet Journalers unite!

The fastest and most convenient way to practice flat nib calligraphy. While the Pilot Parallel doesn't provide the same feel and flow as a traditional dip nib pen, when you just want to knock out some lettering with minimal setup and cleanup, you can't do any better. Plus, the inks are formulated to be mixed, and it's a lot more fun than you might initially think. I bought just one pen for practice, now have two of each size specifically so I can mix colors and knock out work and practice. Many reviewers have been upset about the lack of a previously included "converter", and you should buy this pen with the full knowledge that it's not included, and instead has a plastic bladder meant to only hold water to clean the pen. That said, I'm not a person who is interested in the annoyance of filling my own cartridges, and I like the Pilot ink formulations. Still, if you want to bring your own ink the commercially available Pilot converters will easily fit these pens, and they can also be converted with little effort from a cartridge pen into an eye dropper pen. These pens are unique, fun, and useful. Highly recommended.

My package arrived 2 whole days early, so that alone was awesome. The one pen I tried wrote very smoothly. Just stick the ink capsule into the head of the pen, gently squeeze it a few times to get the ink flowing, screw it back together, and it's ready to go. I won't need more calligraphy pens for a long time.
