The only warning I have is, if you are buying the book used, MAKE SURE, that it has the CD with the book.
This CD is very important and is referenced on every exercise throughout the book. It is not just a Listen-To CD; it is a How-To CD.
You can’t hear the written word and only the CD will give you the hearing experience.
On the plus side, this book did an excellent job of explaining the mechanics of voice production, helped me diagnose my biggest problem (I didn't know how to use my middle voice), and by doing the vocal exercises from the accompanying CD daily, I was able to substantially increase my vocal range as well as volume. And when I say substantially, I really mean it - I was able to extend my usable singing range by nearly an octave. When doing the vocal exercies on a good day I can now hit notes ten semitones (almost an octave) higher than I used to be able to before getting the book!
On the minus side, many of the exercises on the CD suffer from widely variable tempo and irregularly spaced notes - it seems Roger Love has a great voice, but a very poor sense of timing when playing the piano! As a result, it is hard to sing along with some of the later examples, as you never know how long to hold a note or when to expect the next one in the series. Some of the vocal exercises near the end of the CD seem very rushed compared to the earlier ones, as though Mr. Love was in a great hurry to finish the recordings and move on. Also, I still feel that my vocal tone is not very good, and this is one area in which I have not found this book to be very helpful. (For improving your tone production, I find "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Singing" by Phyllis Fulford & Michael Miller to be a better guide.)
All in all, though, I feel Roger Love's book has really helped me to learn to sing better, and to do so without hurting my voice. It is far superior to some of the other books on the subject that I have read or tried to learn from. So I give "Set Your Voice Free" by Roger Love a definite thumbs up!
And, oh yes, I regularly sing (and play guitar) in a room full of people now - my thanks to Roger Love and to this book for the part they played in helping me get past some of my fear!
