Nicholas Meyer is the author of four Sherlock Holmes novels, including The Adventure of the Peculiar Protocols and The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, which was on the New York Times bestseller list for a year. He's a screen-writer and film director, responsible for The Day After, Time After Time, as well as Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country among many others. A native of New York City, he lives in Santa Monica, California.

First, this is a hybrid of a typical novel (dealing with Holmes' drug addiction and the role of Watson and Freud in dealing with it) and a chase story where we know who the bad guy is. Not at all in the golden age whodunit style I was hoping for.

I stopped reading two thirds through which is very rare for me. It was enjoyable enough but nowhere near great literature and without the whodunit component just not enough to justify reading fluff.

Overall worth buying. Not as good as an original Sherlock Holmes story although which book really can be? This may just be bias on my part as I love the originals. I think it is difficult to create a "new" Sherlock story that captures the magic(for lack of a descriptive enough word) of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. This book succeeds in telling an interesting story one that to me was well written in the sense that it did not feel like it tried to hard to copy the language or format of earlier stories. I could say more I am sure but bottom line is if you enjoy Sherlock Holmes and like me have read through the originals and still want more then this book is definitely worth looking into.
