After taking a different direction with her 2004 disc "The Moment", it's almost as if Lisa had disappeared off of the face of the earth. "The Moment" found her diverting from Soul/R&B into a more Pop direction. The album floundered and was forgotten rather quickly. So, after an almost 10 year hiatus, Lisa is back with her seventh album simply entitled "Seven" and it is, quite easily, one of her best!

"Seven" finds Lisa thankfully going back to her R&B roots. Unlike many other veteran artists, Lisa does not make the mistake of trying to sound "relevant" or contemporary, by depending on computerized drum machines and Pop/Techno beats (she's using REAL instruments!!!). And she does not fall into the trap that many of her contemporaries have by recording an album full of covers. No, Lisa sticks with original material and the sound that made her an international star in the first place, retro-soul. She pays homage to the R&B of the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s without sounding outdated. Her voice shines on each and every song. There is something for everyone here, dance songs, mid-tempo jams and smoldering ballads. It's hard to really choose my favorite songs because all of them are pretty darn fantastic!

The only gripe I have is the fact that the CD only has 10 original tracks. There are some bonus tracks. One is a remake of her 1990 #1 R&B smash, "You Can't Deny It". Usually when artists remake their own songs, they come off sounding desparate and hokey. But, this one actually works. She takes the song in a totally different direction without making it unrecognizable. I was expecting not to like it but it's pretty amazing!

I can't improve upon the previous two reviews so I'm just going to say that if you are a Lisa Stansfield fan you will absolutely love 'Seven'. But, I will add that, as always, in addition to Lisa's magnificent voice, her musical accompaniment is superb and serves to make her music that more special; they are a match made in heaven. Lisa Stansfield is a unique talent and I am so glad she has added this new CD to her repertoire. I hope there are many, many more CDs to come.

Hard to believe it's been 10 years since she released anything and nearly 13 since she last released an album in her classic "neo-soul meets Philly RnB" style.

This album picks up where "Face Up" in 2001 left off. It's a collection of wonderful uptempo floor fillers, soulful ballads and RnB delicacies. Production from her husband, Ian Devaney, puts Lisa's voice back in it's ideal setting. And what a voice! She is in magnificent form.

If you liked Lisa "back in the day" you will not be disappointed with this new offering.

First, I'm a big time Lisa fan. I awaited this release with great anticipation. And I was not disappointed. Lisa got back to her winning formula. A little RnB, a little soul, some well written lyrics, some of her signature hooks and all this with an orchestra backing her up! If you liked "The Moment", I'm sorry this one is not for you. There are no throw away tracks on this album. I guess she had plenty of material with the ten year hiatus. My personal favorites are "So Be It" where she tells her man to "love me for me" and "The Crown" where she explains, "you will never wear the crown" to a girl trying to get at her man. "You Can't Deny It, Live" is also a wonderful departure from the original release. Welcome back Lisa, we missed you!!

Lisa has come full circle with this cd. Her voice has deepened become richer and more lush sounding. I enjoyed every track on this cd and anyone of these songs could be a single. I don't think she could ever recapture her American audience due to Arista record stopped releasing her material stateside years ago. Anyone that is a true fan should should grab a copy of this and buy an extra and give to a friend who may not be familiar with Lisa's work. I am so happy with this cd and glad that she has returned to do what she is clearly meant to do. Lisa please don't ever stay away so long.

It's back to soulful basics for Lisa Stansfield for her latest CD release. Her 2004 effort, "The Moment" was a mediocre POP venture that just did not seem to fit her style. "Seven", Stansfield's seventh studio recording brings back the R&B-ish Lisa that America loved. For good measure, the maturing Stansfield has even put in a Jazzy arranged track entitled "Why". The UK single releases from this CD were "Can't Dance", "Carry On" and "So Be It". Those tracks helped Stansfield's current CD to chart at #14 on the UK's charts. In addition to "Why", the other stand-out tracks on this CD for me are "Love Can", "Picket Fence" and "So Be It".The strings on "Love Can" have a Barry White essence to them. "Picket Fence" is an emotive torch song that sounds a lot like "All Woman". "So Be It" has Stansfield's signature soul vocal style from start to finish. She ooohs and ahhhhs! The track alone sounds closest to the sound that made her popular during the peak years of her Arista/BMG tenure..
The CD doesn't seem to have a US release scheduled. The US market is being held hostage by whatever the big corporations allow us to hear.
Amazon is selling it as a pricey import. Four live tracks of previously released familiar Stansfield hits are on the deluxe version.
I was able to hear the whole CD for FREE via You Tube! The tracks are unprotected and can be downloaded provided you have the software to rip off the tracks from You Tube.
