One sentence example that can be lost on many, "We are localized bundles of
consciousness in a conscious universe." Huh? Or how about, "Life is the eternal dance of consciousness that expresses itself as the dynamic exchange of impulses of intelligence between microcosm and macrocosm, between the human body and the universal body, between the human mind and the cosmic mind."
One sentence that may be more understandable, "You must become consciously aware that your future
is generated by the choices you are making in every moment of your life."
I first read this book as a teenager and it was helpful to me on my walk in spirituality. It would not be the only book to follow, but it was a great primer introduction into the spiritual new age type world. You take some things with a grain of salt, but can find helpful advice in other areas. Overall, it's a good book if you're first learning about spirituality.
I got this book by chance from my ant. I didn't talk to my mom for a while in order practice silence and calm down. I read this book slowly. Month by month during 2016, the relationship with my mom recovered. After I started to find my inner peace, I started to find the true-heart-language to communicate to her without assumption and expectation which blocked me in the past. She didn't change at the beginning, but I changed. And now I can see that she is slowly changing her language of communication to me, less impatient and cranky as before. She is more careful in her words to me.
End of 2016, I read the book again and surprisingly realized how the book helped me, not only on the relationship with my mom but on other things in life, such as work, creativity and joy. I had a successful year 2016 on couple life, creativity on art (photography and paintings), personal business and salary increased for well done result at work. I think perhaps, once we start to success to manage “our true Self” internally (Chapter 1), all the external things around us will be managed in good order “with effortless ease” (Chapter 4).
I have ordered many more of this book to present it to my close friends.
Besides, I read other books and had many conversations with my best friends about this topic. But this book is the first key helped me to open the gate of inner peace then I can absorb and learn from other sources. I open to share this with you because if you are interested in and looking for these types of book, which means you looking for your inner peace as me. Wish you find yours or continue to keep the peace staying with you. Enjoy the book!!
But I do have more serious things to say. I confess that I've never been successful at attempts to meditate, which left me feeling that maybe I couldn't accomplish any of the rest of it. Reading on, however, I found myself thinking two sort of contradictory thoughts. (1) I've been there, done and do this. (2) I think for anyone to get the full measure out of this presentation it should follow thorough reading of his other works (which, I confess, I haven't done.)
As for point number one, my major occupation for many years was in teaching psychology, primarily theories of personality and social psych. Reading this, I felt like I was right back home with Abe Maslow and, even more, Karl Jung, with "Self" even spelled with a capital "S." I'm happy being there. I liked the book and its guidance.
The book is full of so many things I'd like to quote. I'll settle for this on page 11. "When we experience the power of the Self, there is an absence of fear; there is no compulsion to control; and no struggle for approval or external power." Which leads me to my next point.
Compelling for me is the resonance with my other career, individual psychotherapy. The content reflects my goals for me and for my clients, and our frequent successes in working toward them. Actually, it won't sit on my cocktail table, but rather in my window seat where I keep materials I lend out when it seems appropriate. Or maybe it should go to my daughter who has found her Self in yoga.
I'd like to propose this as a work to be studied in my discussion group of six rather non-traditional Lutheran women striving to understand our individual faith journeys. I know we'd have a ball with it. I don't think the church would erupt in fiery explosion if we were to focus on this Buddhist based work, and it lends itself so beautifully to "working through."
I'm holding back on the fifth star only because I think the book needs previous experience on the part of the reader to get the full measure from it.
