The Sewell Hammerhead VGA to HDMI converter was a flawless performer in my client's configuration. My client needed to connect a older PC with Windows XP to a HD DLP projection TV that did not have a VGA input.

We first tried a
Cable Matters Portable VGA to HDMI Scaler/Converter  which we could not get to work at all. This was attractive because it only needed the VGA and USB cable (audio came through the USB). Unfortunately it just didn't work at all for us.

The Hammerhead came in a premium box that was clearly designed to store the unit and it's cables when not in use. The packaging itself was impressive.

The Hammerhead is very solidly made. It was noticeably heavy in the hand and gave an immediate impression of quality. You probably don't want to hang it directly on your VGA plug because of this and the moment arm it would create would be a danger.

It comes with a 2ft+ audio cable and similar USB cable (to provide power) and a short VGA cable (to avoid having the Hammerhead sticking out the back of your PC) and a thin flyer that pretty much says plug the parts together in the obvious way. You'll need to provide the HDMI cable yourself which I feel is quite reasonable.

We put it together, plugged everything in. The one quibble with the Hammerhead is not quite enough space to turn the lock screws on the unit itself. We got it done, but unless you have petite fingers you might need to seek someone who does. But again, this is a quibble with an excellent product.

The PC immediately saw the TV as a Sony brand monitor with all the appropriate resolutions available. We set it up in dual monitor mode and it worked perfectly! After our prior experience this was a great relief. Our test was using maximized YouTube playback and it was perfect and audio was excellent.

Going from analog VGA signals to digital HDMI signals isn't so easy to do well. It's almost like unscrambling an egg. The Hammerhead VGA to HDMI converter did it in a very compact package and very well. The Hammerhead has certainly earned 5 stars.

I am a professional musician that needed one dedicated laptop for studio work only and the ability to produce a high definition monitor on a large screen HD TV. My Samsung Large Screen did not have VGA and I also wanted a better sharp image for live recording with no strains of vision. (A lot ot precise details in studio recording).

I didn't want to pay this kind of price for a simple converter adapter, but I also needed something quickly and working immediately. I'm okay with my purchase despite the price.

That said, the Sewell VGA to HDMI works perfectly. Plug it in, attach the cable, and turn it on and go. Easy screen resolution changes on the laptop had a perfect image instantly. I was on in less than five minutes total. This product is simple, well made, and just plain works.

PROS:
1. Very Well Built. Not plastic junk, but metal and hard casing. Nice and firm connections that won't slip. Much better built than most products of this kind out there. Should last forever. (at this price, it had better!)

2. Easy Plug and Play. It has minimal picture instructions, but I can't see anyone really needing them. As said, Five minutes and I was finished and working.

3. Shipping was instant. You just can't order something online and get it any faster. Most excellent order process and delivery time.

4. It just plain works and works well.

CONS:

1. Pricey, Pricey, Pricey! This is an adapter for goodness sake, not a heart monitor! This could be manufactured and sold at a much less price and still turn profit.

2. Knowing that the average consumer isn't going to want to pay this kind of price for a simple adapter they made a box that is sturdy, fancy, colorful, with a magnetized lid (rolling eyes) and looks like you are buying it from a fine jewelry store instead of in a simple, attractive pack that would work quite as well. (you can read some other reviews and see how this impressive ploy worked on people...these guys are smart.....I'll give em that). It probably cost them more to manufacture the box than the adapter itself. I had to have working results immediately or I would have researched and read more reviews of other products even more than I did and probably purchased differently.

I'm sure this packaging was created for the retail box store consumer. (online orders have no way of experiencing this pristine, elegant, packaging before purchase). So in the usual consumer marketing ploy, they created this box to entice a buyer to feel as if they are buying prestige, when at the bottom line, it's still just an adapter. They knew they had to do this to be able to bait and hook the retail buyer into purchasing such a pricey product. Good for them!! Bad for us!

3. The screws to lock down the adapter to the VGA are very, very hard to turn in place. There is simply no room for even small fingers. It holds firmly and well without them and my unit will never move so this isn't an issue with me, but if you want to screw-lock it on and off, you will need the help of a small tool to turn the screws both on and off. It's no biggie, but needs mentioning.

As said, it would get five full stars were it not for this ridiculously pricey item in a ridiculously pricey box.

BUT, if you want THE BEST, WELL MADE ADAPTER, and you are willing to pay the price.......Go for it. Solid......Easy.......Works! and that's what I really wanted in the first place.

I was looking for a way to connect an old computer with vga to a new TV I purchased that only has hdmi inputs. I tried using some cables at first but it did not work that way. I did my research and it turned out that vga can only be upscaled to work with hdmi with a converter.

Then I came across this beast. This thing kicks some serious butt! Works like a charm. Supports many resolutions. Setup is easy, no complicated instruction manuals and no hassle. This little thing does not even need external power and even has an audio input jack that connects to the computer and transmits sound to the TV/monitor. What more could you ask for?

It comes with a short (about 3 inch) vga male/female cable, so that the device itself does not have to be plugged straight into the device, which is convenient if it was to be used with a laptop for example, as it would not get in hands way as much.

The device itself and the mini vga cable are high quality copper. It also comes with a 3.5mm stereo jack however, that is not copper. Using this cable, I was only able to get mono sound through my TV. Good thing I had an extra copper stereo cable that allowed me to get stereo sound. With this, everything is perfect now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compatible with DOS gaming and text mode graphics!

Works very well with old 486 computers running DOS and windows 95/98SE.If your monitor or TV has no was no VGA input this is an excellent converter. Tested successfully with 60/70Hz resolutions including the 720x400 resolution that many VGA to HDMI adaptors fail on. Slight loss at the edges at 640x480 on Samsung televisions but is perfectly OK on the Samsung 930BF and DELL U2412M monitors with a HDMI to DVI adaptor. Other resolutions are perfectly good. One unsupported DOS game is Psycho pinball. Mode not supported on that game but the VGA port on the U2412M monitor does not support it either. And only the beginning BIOS splash screens when using the first Matrox Millennium graphics card does not show yet again the U2412M suffers with this. Commander Keen is distorted and red in appearance from a Matrox Millennium but show very well on a Nvidia GeforceFX 5700 slightly pink tint. Tested perfectly fine with a Dell D530 and tested from graphics cards as old as the ISA ATI mach32 right up to a Nvidia GTS450 and tested resolutions from a mega low 160x120 upto the highest 2048x1536 where it squeezes the picture in! Oh and the sound pass through to HDMI is spot on! Unsupported resolutions will not pass through the sound so you will have an idea if the adaptor or television is to blame. Truly amazing conversion! Well done Sewell!

If you know what you're doing all well and Good, but, if you're like me and don't really know what you're doing, you read reviews and take advice from well meaning community members, family and friends, and try and put two and two together with what you have.
I hate to say it amongst such glowing reviews, but this didn't work for me.

I gave it 4 Stars for cosmetics, display and packaging.
It looks Good, strong, sturdy and very well made.
It comes in a neat and tidy presentation box - almost like a jewel box with a chunky bracelet.

I had contemplated keeping it - just in case...or keeping it to give away as part of a 2-part present or a stocking filler.

I think I need Scart.

Thank You!
