It also has a few sewing projects in the book for you to practice certain sewing techniques. These practice projects are priceless. Better to practice on these projects before you embark on your own sewing journey. It will save you a lot of heart ache, trust me.
I haven't actually read the book cover to cover, although I would recommend it. Myself, I was just to anxious to get sewing. I read the first three chapters. But I have have opened it quite a few times when I needed to know a sewing technique. It gives great instructions and it encompasses all the basics.I borrowed it from the library for about 2 months and finally purchased the book, I've owned the booked for about 5 months now.
Compared to other books I like how you don't need to read it cover to cover. I can reference the book as I go, project to project. Learning techniques as I go. However, I probable missed tips not reading it cover to cover. So the choice is up to you, reading it cover to cover or just referencing it as you go. Compared to other books I like how it reads, it's not monotonous. It's doesn't read like an encyclopedia. It points out special tips and no nos. I just enjoying sewing more than I do reading.
This book will never be outdated like some reference books, sewing techniques don't change much. Once you grasp the basics maybe you could pass it on to a future novice, or even a family member to keep the art and joy of sewing alive.
However, if you're super excited and just want to get your hands dirty with your first project, you can skip maybe the first 4 chapters and get to the nitty-gritty. Since I know virtually nothing about sewing, I read through the first 4 and it kinda dampened my excitement a little. So, my advice: jump around and read about what you're excited about first and then go back. It sounds convoluted but, don't worry! She pretty much references EVERYTHING!
The book itself I'd give four stars. It is a thick paperback (in good condition) of predominately illustrated black and white drawings, a table, counted only eight colored pages, and lots of written fundamentals from basic techniques to repairing clothing according to the author. Perfect to get my daughter started on her goal of making her own cloths.
