I am using this book to teach a sewing class for the local quilting club in Sugar Land Tx. This book covers a lot, before this book we had to use 4 books to get the same information and the other books were expensive. This book covers a lot for such a low cost book. If you want a more basic book the same author also has another book called the Sewing Machine Quick Guide that we have also been using for our basic sewing class. The beginning chapters of both books are similar but the Master Guide has advanced chapters and goes into greater detail, also Quick Guide does not cover industrial machines.

1. The book covers both modern and vintage machines, the other books we found are outdated.

2. The chapters on thread and needles are very detailed, way more detail on thread types and thread sizing than in other books, this info is available on the Internet but it would take days to find it all.

3. The chapter on tension adjustment has great pictures and makes it easy to work out tension problems.

4. The chapter on buying recommendations is not biased towards promoting premium machines but uses sound reasoning. Machines at all price points are covered.

5. The coverage of vintage machines is great, all of the popular Singer, Pfaff, Necchi and Japanese machines are covered.

6. The chapter on industrial machines covers all types and gives enough information so that even someone with no prior experience with industrial machines can get up to speed quickly. In some applications an industrial machine really can be a big advantage.

7. The chapters on quilting machines and embroidery machines are a good introduction to these types of machines and give the fundamentals and cover some of the more popular models.

My wife's first employment was with Singer Sewing Machine Company in 1945-1950. The most popular sewing machine then was the 15-91 which she bought as soon as sewing machines could be manufactured after WWII. I knew she would like this book. Reading the book was a trip back in time for her. And like meeting an old friend again, the 15-91. She agrees with the author, it was the best sewing machine ever made.

I just received this book today, and I can see that it does contain some valuable information about sewing machines, both vintage and new. I've spent a lot of time looking for books on sewing machine repair, and all those I can find are over 30 years old. It's great to see a newer book, and I'm sure all the other technically inclined sewers will also be happy to see it. I do wish the print version had a better layout. I normally buy print books when the layout is important to me, because .mobi and.epub books neglect this very important factor in enjoying a non-fiction book. So while I rate the content of the book a five, go for the kindle version, as the print copy is just a .mobi file that's been printed and bound.

I am very impressed with this book so far. As other readers have pointed out, there are a few proof reading errors but the sections I've read through so far are superb. Also, just wanted to say for those of you confused by an earlier review that this was just machine copied papers or whatever - not the case at all. The book looks like any other large paperback manual. The cover is very nice as well. Professionally printed by a printer, it's not some laser print job from Kinko's! I've added some pictures since I had a hard time finding any myself.

This book is great for the person just starting out in sewing and wanting to decide which machine to get, as it has a huge list of models descriptions with the pros and cons of each. Blodget's not in the pay of any sewing machine manufacturer so he tells it like it is. Its information is extensive enough to also suit the professional tailor or sewing-business-person.

It also has an extensive maintenance and repair how-to section.

Blodget tells how a sewing machine works (it's quite ingenious), which helps you be an informed user of it (how not to break or jam it). He also has a section on the various kinds of stitches (did you know there are actual international standards for them?)
There's a short section on "how to use the sewing machine" -- this is actually very brief and basic.

This book is: An in-depth information guide to sewing machines themselves

This book is not: An in-depth guide on how to sew various kinds of articles.
You will want to get another book for actual sewing and tailoring techniques.

Interesting reading. It's a great read up until he gets to the "Buying Recommendations" part.

He's recommending a $99 Singer as a good machine. They don't even have service panels, which makes them disposable. I've taught classes with the "Singer Heavy Duty" machines, and by the time we were done, those students were getting rid of them for all the problems they were having, compared to the "premium machines" that the other students were using.

We joke that we should tell the customers they'll have to take those cheap Walmart and JoAnn machines (Singer and Brother) back to their sewing machine mechanic -- because there isn't one. Oh, looks like he just showed up, and has written a book. LOL! I think the word is "propaganda." When you sprinkle a few lies in with a lot of great, true information, to make it more believable.

He writes, "There is little or no difference in the stitch quality between inexpensive machines and premium machines." While it is true that you can usually get a good stitch quality on most machines, it is not true that you can keep a good stitch quality on those machines. We can set the timing on those cheap machines, and it will make a great stitch. But they'll be back next month with the same problem, because the metal they use in them is such poor quality, it won't hold a timing setting. We've had those machines come into the store, with the timing off, right out of the box!

He does list a few good machines in the mix, but he's obviously wanting to sell you a cheap machine over a "premium" home or domestic machine. Think about it...
