Sex and the City: The Movie Special Edition (Dbl DVD)
More Labels. More Love. Sex and the City The Extended Cut reveals never-before-seen moments not shown in theaters! For too long, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) had been looking for love in all the wrong places…but in all the right shoes. In this much anticipated movie event, Carrie, Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) are back, four years after the hit TV series ended. As they continue to juggle career, relationships, motherhood and life in Manhattan, the girls realize that more than ever, true friendship never goes out of style.]]>
As light and frothy as the Vivienne Westwood wedding gown that's an unofficial fifth star, the film version of Sex and the City is both captivatingly stylish and sweetly sentimental. Viewers who loved hanging with Carrie Bradshaw and her three pals during the series' TV run will feel as though no time has passed. Except that it has: Carrie and Big are poised to make a Big Commitment; Miranda and Steve are facing the breakup of their wonderful family; Charlotte and Harry have added to their brood; and Samantha (are we sitting down?) has been devoted to hunky Smith for five full years. Still, in all that time, the women's style, conviviality, and appetite for bons mots have only grown. When practical attorney Miranda learns that Carrie is considering moving in with Big (in possibly the coolest apartment in Manhattan), she can't help but frown in that but-you-might-lose-everything way. Carrie's retort: "For once, can't you feel what I want you to feel--jealous?!" The cast is spot-on, as always. Sarah Jessica Parker is effortless as the angst-ridden yet practical, stylish yet vulnerable Carrie. Kim Cattrall is deliciously decadent as Samantha, but she's wiser now and knows herself and her needs for a real relationship. Kristin Davis, as Charlotte, has quietly become the most gorgeous among the beauties, her sleek presence both winsome and sophisticated. And Cynthia Nixon (Miranda) shows nuance as a woman torn between betrayal and grudging hope. Supporting roles include Candice Bergen as the Vogue editor who anoints Carrie "The Last Single Girl in New York," and Jennifer Hudson, as a starry-eyed, ambitious romantic who represents the new generation of SATC women. Through it all, New York is a benevolent cocoon that envelopes and nurtures the women and their friendships and careers. No matter that none of them appears to have any semblance of "real" family; as long as they have each other, and Manhattan, all will be right with their world. --A.T. Hurley

The film itself is LONG, surprisingly long, and with this extended edition we're talking about an extra 10-15 minutes of unseen footage. The additional footage makes perfect sense for hardcore fans, these additional scenes are not only at times funny but they extend an offering of extra "hope" and sometimes "explanation" of scenes that were previously concluded.
The TWO disc special edition is a perfect trade in for anyone who rushed out to purchase the film when it released in stores. On your second disc you will find an amazing conversation between show Creator Michael Patrick King and Executive producer / Star, Sarah Jessica Parker. Together they discuss everything from the process of character development - to fashion decisions with Pat Field. You will also find three additional scenes that did NOT make it into the extended cut of the film which are alternate takes on what you DID see make the final cut.
Overall I rated this product ***** stars because it is a collector's DREAM to carry this film as a personal memento of appreciation, fandom and hope. Without plot give away - I will simply say this .... Once you find love, and once you think you've settled your dreams, does the "dream" always amount to reality? and when challenges arise in our personal lives, are we truly willing to accept what has been handed to us through circumstance, choice and history?.
I was excited to see where Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte were in their lives and I think they did a great job picking back up. There was plenty of drama and relationship mayhem that kept it interesting. One of the things that I loved about the series was that the show was not just about sex/romantic relationships but also about friendship. Female friendship to be exact and the special bond that women have and the trials they go through. I loved that the movie also dealt with that. Miranda and Carrie's friendship was tested and I loved the way Charlotte in her typical "Charlotte way" showed her loyalty and the way they all rallied around Carrie like true friends do. I laughed, I cried, I got angry at the characters.
I think this is a must for all SATC fans (some may not enjoy as I've seen on other reviews)to catch up on their lives. Also a must for those that like love stories or movies about friendships.
I am still a Carrie Bradshaw fan and will continue to watch this over and over.
Carrie Bradshaw's wedding to Mr. Big is the centerpiece of the film. While there were many times I thought of Mr. Big as Mr. Big JERK, it's still only fitting that he is "the one" whom Carrie is to marry. From the earliest episodes of the series, Carrie's & Mr. Big's lives weaved in & out of each other.
There are a host of subplots as Samantha and Miranda have their own issues to deal with. Meanwhile, sweet Charlotte has her biggest wish come to fruition. That's good to see, as Charlotte was always my favorite character on the show.
One of the things that makes this movie so poignant is that we already KNOW all of the characters thoroughly. We know about Carrie's flaws, and we love her anyway. A great deal of "character development" is unnecessary as these are our friends from way-back-when.
There have been rumors that there might be a sequel in the works. I am a little squeamish about that idea as I'm not sure where the story can "go" from here. The original premise was about 4 single women in New York. Well, 3 of them are now married off. It seems to me that a sequel would degenerate into its being a "regular" run-of-the-mill soap opera, whereas SEX AND THE CITY was always so much more than that. We'll see what happens.
So, if you're a fan of the show, then this DVD is a must-have. If you were only curious about the show, then I would suggest you watch all the episodes 1st as it's important to have a clear picture of how important to see the backdrop of the stories which culminate in the movie's plot. Welcome back girls!
