First, they are really fun. For everyone. We had a few kids at this bonfire between 12-14 and they loved it. We were definitely wary of letting them get too close to throw some on the fire, but they enjoyed both watching and trying to throw the crystals (metals) into the fire. Adults, as well, enjoyed the show.
Second, the color didn't last for anywhere close to 5 minutes. 5 seconds may be more accurate. Every fire is different, and hotter fires (I would imagine) combust the material quicker so it may have just burned off very fast, but it was a tad disappointing. This brings us to....
Third, it takes a lot of crystals to produce a result. Perhaps it was the heat of the fire or something else, but the sprinkle slot on the top of the container was utterly useless. It took the large opening to produce a result in the fire. Which is how we wound up using an entire package for one fire.
While it was expensive, it was a fun novelty and certainly added to an otherwise dull fire. The kids got involved and entertained and the show was pretty good. Enjoy them!
1) If you're using a starter log, aka duraflame or any similar product covered in paper: wait until the paper has burned off before adding your crystals. Otherwise the paper will just curl and flip the crystals onto the floor of your fireplace. Such a waste of a great light show!
2) If you're looking for a lot of color, use a LOT of crystals. A sprinkling of crystals will only give a hint of blue and purple to your fire.
Pro tip: trying to surprise someone requires them not being in the room when you add the crystals. My boyfriend quickly figured out that I'd misdirected him in searching for matches and came back in while I was trying to open the container. Still, he was touched by the gesture and loved the crystals!
Cons: Only two colors are created.
Other Thoughts: This was good for use when there was not time to wait on raw chemicals to ship and arrive to treat logs myself. Will pursue the raw chemicals to treat firewood myself and get a wider range of colors that release throughout the fire.
