If the above is sending your blood pressure soaring, this isn't the book for you. If your reaction instead is "Sounds interesting! Tell me more!" please proceed.....
I haven't read other books by Jesse Ventura but he makes no bones about his "straight-shooter, call it as I see it" libertarianism/liberalism/humanism. He wants America to get better, not worse, and he mocks the ideas that would take us backwards in environmental regulations, on women's rights, including abortion, on civil rights, on picking fights with other countries. He is progressive, not regressive, and the quotes he chooses are often stunning in their idiocy--and that they are said by our contemporaries (he also has a chapter on the Founding Fathers, but honestly, they're mostly just awesome, as you'd expect. The dis from Adams that Washington might not be up to the job, is kind of funny in hindsight, but also Washington was great but Adams was a genius so....don't we wish were were having those kinds of arguments today?
People who don't like Ventura's politics will give it "1 star" and I'd disregard those reviews completely. From looking over them, honestly, I don't think many of them have even seen the book. Initially I gave it 4 stars because its mostly in others' words (and I choose 5 stars usually for a writer's own exceptional words, or exceptional editing. As I wrote the review I went back and changed it to 5. The editing here isn't exceptional, exactly, but I thought it was very good and Ventura's edit gives it some of his voice even though, other than a brief introduction, it's all quotations.
I liked the quotes being by topic--rather than chronologically--and then Ventura adds his voice a little with a title before the quotes, kind of summarizing them and indicating what he thought of them at the same time. They are all sourced, which I like. It's a nice conversation book, reading around the family dinner or just taking a look and remembering some of our leaders really do say the most appalling things--and get a lot of support for it. All in all, it's a quick, fun read, well organized and I learned things. (Hmmm... maybe will boost that rating after all....)
