Nice Collection of Songs about the American Civil War

When I was a kid, I used to enjoy watching a series of videos released for the 125th anniversary of the Civil War. Each video featured a complete reenactment of a major battle, with narration and maps. I purchased this album because I loved the music used in those videos and some of these songs ("Tears Of A Generation," "Mule Shoe") are on it. I wish I could find the other songs used in the 125th anniversary videos on CD or mp3. Not every song on this album is of the highest quality, but the few that make the grade are worth spending $6-8 for. "Death Of Jenny Wade" is a favorite, along with the two I mentioned earlier.

If you've never heard Dave Matthews work before, you need to buy this CD and pop it in. He captures the spirit of the Civil War era and brings the experience to life in ways mere words could never convey. I've marched the route of the U.S. Sixth Corps, 120 miles to Gettysburg from Northern Virginia, on the 140th, 145th and 150th anniversary. This music was either playing in my head or on the chase car stereo throughout the week each time. Thanks, Dave!

These songs are not written in the Civil War period

The price is great, the audio quality is good and the words in the songs are inspiring. There's one glitch, however. These are not original songs composed and written by people who witnessed the Civil War, but are modern ones composed in the 20th century, thus losing most of the aesthetic value that one usually derives from the historical authenticity.

I am a huge Civil War buff. I do prefer actual type music form the Civil War, but I do find this CD by Dave Matthews very entertaining. Unlike previous reviews, I think this is a very good CD about the Civil War. I think Mr Matthew captured a feeling for the times in upbeat folksy way.

A misleading title; should be subtitled "Modern Songs of the Civil War." Average vocal quality and heavy on modern acoustics. Customers looking for traditional authentic music of the US Civil War can ignore this CD. Disappointing....
