The story is compelling and easy to read. The writing style is plain. As an added bonus for me, the story is set in Titusville Pennsylvania. I grew up in the even smaller next town over so it was fun to run into places and people I know.
Within the book you will get an intimate view of life in a 1950s small town, complete with the prevailing mindset of the time. Here masculinity walks hand in hand with femininity, a family lives in a tidy little house surrounded by a white picket fence, and those within wear rose-colored glasses. Prejudices, stigmas, or tragedies are buried beneath the surface, where they lie hidden, waiting.
For me, Shades of Blues was more than just a fictional glimpse into the lives of a newly married couple. Growing up in the same small town, being familiar with the main characters, knowing a bit of their story, and then joining them in the pages of this book set the stage for a rather surreal reading experience. Needless to say, this recounting of their personal and pivotal journey touched me deeply, especially since its ripples continue to affect lives today.
