My Kindle has always had a special place in my heart but I love it even more now that it allows me to read the writings of 1st time writers like Melissa Myers. Many new writers entertain me but don't really impress me. Others fall very short on both counts. Myers is not one of these. Her talent for writing seems natural and her story is superior... well above what I expect from new fantasy/paranormal authors. I don't want to give much of the story away so I'll just say I was quickly drawn in to Jala's life and was pleasantly surprised when other characters were as equally appealing. There were times when the plot twists were not expected but in the end, I ended up loving them and wanting to know more. It's nice that this book isn't just like everything else that's out there. Myers kept me on my toes with my emotions, imagination and opinions spinning. As I read, I felt happy, sad, mad, surprised, disappointed, and so on.

"In Shades of Grey" is high on my list of recommendations. I really can't explain how impressed I was with this book, especially compared to many other downloads I've been reading lately. I read the 1st chapter of her next book (at the website listed under her author notes here at Amazon, melissamyersbooks) and I can't wait for it to come out this fall.:)

Bravo Myers!

Normally, I don't write reviews for books; I've 472 in my kindle library, and a few hundred more books in assorted other formats, and don't want to be constantly writing reviews on other peoples' works (at least, not without being paid for it). I'm making an exception because I think Myers (the author) is one of the best to break into the overall fantasy scene recently, not just the "indie kindle author" scene.

Myers' world is inventive, populated by a host of unique races and magic systems (including some "Malazan Book of the Fallen" type elements such as the ability for magic-users to ascend to personify traits such as Honor or Fortune). However, where the Malazan series can be at times overly dense and dragging, Myers manages a great plot, superior pacing, and a natural writing style all of which contribute nicely to the reader's enjoyment. There are a few aspects I might have liked to read more of, such as Jala's training at the Academy or the mechanics of the magic; this lack is easily ignored, and I'm still unsure as to whether it's due to this being a first novel or due to pacing/mystery/other authorial concerns.

There are, sadly, significant editing issues, most egriously frequently missing or incorrect grammar and punctuation. Normally, these don't bother me too much- after all, for $3 what do you expect? Here though, you'll stumble far too frequently on some missing apostrophe, or feel like a sentence is awkward due to a comma where there should be a semi-colon. It's a real shame; the book is otherwise so enjoyable, the author so promising that I'd even done a brief search to try to find her email and offer to edit her novel (I couldn't find a website or email, sadly).

This was a very hard book to read. I don't know if all kindle versions ended up like mine or if it was submitted that way but my goodness. No spaces between a lot of words, there is a full page of one big jumble of mess? The biggest irritant was any word with a ', in it it showed as a " backwards. The story however grabbed enough of my attention that I'm contemplating reading the next. I'm just afraid to pay for another tone of these books to find the same issue with it.

HIGHLY recommended! Such a refreshing change in the world of fantasy. It is far from your typical fantasy and exactly what I've been looking for in a new book. Myers is an absolute natural! I have been addicted from the beginning. The storyline is so well laid out, with the perfect amount of detail, not lacking or overbearing, that you become very familiar with each character and their personality and can truly relate to them. There is such wonderful character structure that I found myself becoming so attached to them that my own emotions surfaced and I was brought to tears at certain moments. The array of emotions Myers can evoke is astonishing. She is far from predictible in her writing, keeping you on your toes consistantly and leaving you begging for more! I would love to someday see her story on the big screen, especially for those who don't read. It would be a shame not to share her work further! Before I had finished the last chapter I was anxious for the second book which I am now currently reading. I must say that the second is no less incredible and is another MUST read from Myers! I can't say enough good things about this author, but don't just take my word for it, experiance it yourself! Keep them coming!

I came across this book while searching for a similar title and am so glad that I did. A mix of epic fantasy & a wee bit of sci-fi makes for a refreshing new world to explore. I enjoyed the blend of action, lighter political intrigue, and romance. The world building was complex with many diverse characters, but unlike many larger scope novels you're not bombarded with information. Instead you follow the heroine, Jala and learn as she learns about magic & the world at large. I thought all the characters came alive with well thought personalities. I was so happy to see a heroine who was smart, strong, with commen sense, and yet naive. I also absolutly fell in love with Finn. I have already read bks 2&3 in this series and can't wait for bk 4- Highly recommend!
