"In Shades of Grey" is high on my list of recommendations. I really can't explain how impressed I was with this book, especially compared to many other downloads I've been reading lately. I read the 1st chapter of her next book (at the website listed under her author notes here at Amazon, melissamyersbooks) and I can't wait for it to come out this fall.:)
Myers' world is inventive, populated by a host of unique races and magic systems (including some "Malazan Book of the Fallen" type elements such as the ability for magic-users to ascend to personify traits such as Honor or Fortune). However, where the Malazan series can be at times overly dense and dragging, Myers manages a great plot, superior pacing, and a natural writing style all of which contribute nicely to the reader's enjoyment. There are a few aspects I might have liked to read more of, such as Jala's training at the Academy or the mechanics of the magic; this lack is easily ignored, and I'm still unsure as to whether it's due to this being a first novel or due to pacing/mystery/other authorial concerns.
There are, sadly, significant editing issues, most egriously frequently missing or incorrect grammar and punctuation. Normally, these don't bother me too much- after all, for $3 what do you expect? Here though, you'll stumble far too frequently on some missing apostrophe, or feel like a sentence is awkward due to a comma where there should be a semi-colon. It's a real shame; the book is otherwise so enjoyable, the author so promising that I'd even done a brief search to try to find her email and offer to edit her novel (I couldn't find a website or email, sadly).Read more ›
