I've read the previous three books in the past two weeks, and while the series' characters and world have expanded nicely I found myself losing interest with this book. I felt like this book intended to take the characters to a new level - stepping the protagonist into a leadership role and expanding her problems from dealing with individual issues to dealing with group issues. I think the problem was there was just too much going on (and still too much of the protagonist talking to herself) for you to get really invested in any of it. Lots of subplots show up, you change focus to different characters and lose that single threaded story view, lots of characters from previous books show up but I didn't feel like the characters got any further fleshed out from the previous books. The author shifts focus to the crime boss "brother" at times, and I couldn't tell if that was trying to make him a more developed character or just an excuse to move the plot along in an area where the main protagonist wasn't standing. Then the book sort of crashes to an abrupt halt. It's certainly not a bad read - it just didn't make me feel interested enough in how this world was developing to continue reading the series.

I generally enjoyed the 4 books in the series so far, although the main character got a little annoying with constantly insisting she could take care of herself after being rescued, and insisting she wasn't the stupid girl who runs into trouble while running into trouble. Also the assumption of being tough due to magic skills, when nulls are everywhere, is an oft repeated stupidity. However, I HATE books that end in cliffhangers when the next book is not even planned. I knew there were 4 books when I started, and I assumed - with the usual result - that the story would finish with the 4th book, but no. Lots going on, major character gets shot, book ends. I may be pissed enough to not buy the next book. I read 2 other books by this author, in different series, that did not pull this cliffhanger crap, which was one of the reasons I started the series. I may not bother with the 5th book, whenever it comes out. If I do bother and the 5th book is also a cliffhanger, I will be done with this author.

I waited until I finished them all before writing a review because I refused to stop reading! Periodically I will get it in my head that I could write a book if I just applied myself. Then I read a series like this and I know better. I could never do what Diana has done. These books have grabbed me in such a way that I am lost when I'm reading them. I run through the gamut of emotions with every volume which for me is the very best a book can do. I am so in love with these characters, both bad and good, and wish I could meet them! That's how real they are to me. Riley is the funniest most bumbling heroine and without her family, friends and her love, Price, she'd probably be lost, or worse, dead. And she knows it. It's what keeps her loyal and honest knowing she has these wonderful people in her corner cheering her on no matter how crazy her ideas may be. She's even won the loyalty of her enemy, Gregg, Price's brother. Riley has managed to capture everyone's hearts. What an amazing character. Such fun, such love, and such intense loyalty are what make up this amazing woman. And how incredibly well Diana portrays this! It is this ability to put thoughts, ideas, feelings and visions to paper and have us soak it up like sponges that is the difference between my delusions of possibly being able to write and a true and phenomenal author.
I'm so glad this isn't done. I'm so glad there will be more. I hate when series I really love end, and I hope this one doesn't see that happening for a long time to come.
So very well done, Diana Pharaoh Francis! Hurry with the next one!

Loved this book - this series just keeps getting better and better. I have loved every book in this series, but this one is, to me, the best... and I cannot wait to read the next one.I think what really makes this book is we also get Gregg's viewpoint... which really adds a richness to the book, especially in how he sees Price and Riley.
While we get some major growth of characters and relationships, we do not get much further into figuring out who the ultimate bad-guys are - or their end game, and there is a huge "twist" at the end regarding the ultimate bad guy. I know some have claimed their was a cliffhanger, but I do not see it that way. The main story issues in this book were handled, wrapped-up - it is the over-all story arc where their are still a lot of questions, and even more so after this book. To me, that is not a cliffhanger.
Very enjoyable read, cannot wait for the next one.

What happened to this series? The main characters should just get superhero suits made that say Passion Power!. Every move they make is passion. So much passion is described that apparently, there was no room for the rest of the plot. It has a massive cliffhanger ending.

I normally love her books. The writing was impeccable as always and the story great, but I don't enjoy being left with major cliffhangers.

I've liked this series from the first book. There's a strong heroine surrounded by interesting characters in a modern world with magic. The series is ongoing though, and this book picks up where the previous book left us, only to end with more open-ended issues, if not an actual cliffhanger. Start from the first book, "Trace of Magic" and enjoy the ride.

Like the story, a lot of overthinking narrative by the main character , however a great read. My main beef - it’s been 2 years since the last cliffhanger, when will the next book come out?
