I was a little hesitant about starting this book because Kade is new to the warrior and not one of the original warriors. I am so glad I listened to my gut on this book and ordered it. The author did a great job making you feel like you personally know the characters and are right in the scenes with them. The book also sets up the storyline for the next installment of the series.
Lara Adrian continues to do what she does best. Interesting involving plots, cohesive ties to her past stories and surprising twists to keep the reader engrossed. First we have another Distinct and interesting Breed warrior: Kade. I did not get a sense of who he was from the earlier books. Here Adrian builds a completely satisfying background for who he is and what brought him into the Order. Kade is trying to escape his family's problems. Kade has a twin. He and his twin Seth have been gifted by his Breedmate mother with the "wild". They can communicate with wild animals and growing up, Kade and Seth loved running "wild". For reasons unknown to Kade, his stern father doted on Seth and kept his distance from Kade. After Kade discovers that Seth has given into the wild and gone Rogue, Kade cannot bring himself to stop Seth and so he escapes to Boston and joins the Order.
Alex, a woman who does not know she is a Breedmate, had escaped with her beloved father to Alaska after her mother and brother were brutally killed by Rogue vampires. She is brave, loyal and an ace pilot. When a rogue vampire commits the mass murder of a family in the remote bush town of Harmony, Alex is sucked into trying to solve the mystery of who or what is killing innocent Harmony residents.
Alex and Kade meet because Kade senses that Alex has information that will help him track down the Rogue vampires and he can get his unwanted return to Alaska over with as soon as possible. What Kade did not anticipate is that because Alex is a Breedmate, she draws him into her in ways that he never anticipated.
This story had everything that I enjoy in her books. Great characterizations. Good dialogue. Plot twists and turns that are engrossing and make sense not only to the individual story but also true to the entire arc of the Midnight Breed world.
I love, love, love the action scenes with the arrival of Tegan, Hunter, Chase, Brock with Kade. The love scenes with Kade and Alex are beautifully written and not just stock schlock from cheap romance books.
Can't wait for Brock's story!
The pace of the book is fairly fast and the story keeps up and while some of the goings on are a stretch in the believability department (ie, the amount of dead and mutilated piling up), I am glad that Ms. Adrian did not leave them untied, even if it was to only be accomplished with a group rate mind scrub and a few desolate wilderness ravines.
One thing I do wish to see is that the sex stay spiced up. Missionary is always nice I am sure that these century's old vampires must have knowledge of the kama sutra. Also, the Ancient. I hold out hope that he is finding his humanity while chilling under tons of snow and ice (which I don't see containing him cuz he ran around the entire book buck naked). And I hope they give Brock a worthy mate and not just throw him together with Jenna cuz she's available. I don't think there can be that many breedmates in a town of 100 people.
So a good read and a great way to get through a couple of days. I am looking forward to her next effort.
