I missed out on the first book and in a series, sometimes that can spell disaster. Not a chance here! I get that most of the characters have shared history (Probably from the first book) but the author has presented it in a way that I easily caught on and I never felt lost. Cappy and Michelle were pretty awesome. Both with some pretty tragic history, especially Michelle. It wasn’t easy to watch her go through PTSD but it was endearing to see Cappy help her through her episodes. Kudos to the author for allowing her character to develop into her empowerment without having her PTSD magically go away. There is a natural development of their relationship, despite all the crisis’s they go through. Their HEA was all I could wish for. The secondary characters were amazing. No fillers here! They played such a great part I would love to see them all get their own stories.
As for the story itself, it was great. I usually don’t go for military stories. They usually contain the same guns, bad guys, workaholic, yada, yada, yada pieces that really don’t excite me. Even though it had the military some aspects it wasn’t enough to bore me. Instead, I found this action packed story hit the ground running luring me in from the beginning. Lots of twists and surprises had me completely engaged. Although I kept thinking why did everybody keep gunning for this poor girl? What could Michelle have done to piss off so many people! The reveals and the whys were fairly complex once I find out what everything was revolving around.Read more ›
It was a good read, thought I must admit that at times I found it a tad slow going and Michelle, the lead female, did my head in slightly - I know that she had suffered through a terrible experience and was suffering from PTSD - some of the things she did annoyed me a little (maybe it's just a case of not connecting with her character fully). Jeremy (Cappy) was really likeable - a standup guy who has his own secrets and skeletons - personally I felt for a fair bit of the story that he thought too much about what was best for the team/others around him rather than what he wanted or was good for him - but overall he was a great hero.
We met other members of the SBG team which was good but at times I found myself having to stop and think about what code name related to which character, it did get a little busy with all those different characters running around.
The connection and attraction between the 2 leads was hot and full on. The story was action packed and full of suspense & intrigue and kept me interested.
I'd rate Shadow of Doubt a 3.75*. I will read the next book in the series - I know who I hope it might be about - and at some point I will go back and read the first book as I'd like to find out what went on with Wraith.
