Editorial Reviews

Review

“Beginning with the premise that people fear their shadow self, this stellar lineup sets out to bring the collective shadow into the light and teach readers how to manage it until it can be dissolved.” (New Age Retailer)

From the Back Cover

Deepak Chopra, Debbie Ford, and Marianne —New York Times bestselling authors and internationally acclaimed teachers—have joined together to share their knowledge on one of the most crucial obstacles to happiness we face—the shadow. These three luminaries, each with a signature approach, bring to light the parts of ourselves we deny but that still direct our life. For it is only when we embrace our shadow that we discover the gifts of our authentic nature.

The shadow exists within all of us. It is a part of us and yet we spend most of our life running from it. But far from being scary, our dark side holds the promise of a better, more fulfilling life. Our shadow makes itself known every day. It is the reason we get furious over a friend showing up ten minutes late, yell at our parents or kids when they have done nothing wrong, and sabotage our own success at the worst possible time. Until we are able to embrace our dualistic nature, we will continue to hurt ourselves and those closest to us and fall short of our potential.

Combining the wisdom of three experts, The Shadow Effect is a practical and profound guide to discovering the gifts of our shadow. These three authors powerfully pierce the veil of our unclaimed self, releasing us from the past and propelling us on a journey to wholeness. No longer living a half life, we are capable of achieving our dreams and reclaiming the happiness that is our birthright.

This book featuring Debbie Ford, Deepak Chopra and Marianne Williamson evolved out of the movie The Shadow Effect: Illuminating the Hidden Power of Your True Self that recently brought the three of them together. While the movie serves as an introduction to the concepts of the shadow and how it limits us as human beings, The Shadow Effect book is a deep exploration of that which most of us have hidden and tried to contain within ourselves. Of the three authors, Ford contributes the most clarity and definition to what the shadow is and how it shows up in our lives. But all share equally valuable information and insightes from their unique perspectives, offering a depth of experience and wisdom on this most vital of topics. Reading this book is both challenging and enlightening. It can be depressing as we learn the truth of who we are, yet hopeful as we discover the power that the comes from healing and integrating the Shadow. This is a must read for anyone committed to supporting a shift in consciousness on the planet.

A powerful and profound film that documents how our personal and collective shadows influence our lives. Intense and thought provoking, I felt this film explores our world through the len of the shadow and leaves us looking at the roots of our world's problems. It offers hope in showing us the power we have access to if we are willing to deal with our shadow self. If you are interested in moving foward in your spiritual life and shifting consciousness, I highly recommend seeing this film. It is a must for anyone wanting to undestand the struggle they feel inside themselves between their greatness and feeling completely unworthy and undeserving of love and good things.

Hi, I am passionate about personal development, so I bought this DVD thinking I was getting something that would help me deal with my shadow self. What really upset me was that it glossed over the topic and did nothing to show us how to actually deal with the shadow other than very general advice like "forgive yourself." Then it says at the end to go to the shadoweffect.com to learn more and it takes you to a $149 course! It's a slick and engaging "documentary" but I really just paid $20 for an infomercial. Would never have expected this from Debbie Ford, Deepak Choprah and Marianne Williamson. I have read the positive reviews on this DVD and am appalled by how gullible people are when they see famous names. Yes this is an important topic, which is why I bought the DVD, but it's just an emotional and inspiring advertisement to get you motivated to do the expensive course.

This is the best movie of its genre I have seen. It speaks to a topic that is so appropriate to the times we are in and covers it straight forward, to the point. What makes this movie stand out even further from other "transformational" movies, is that it offers clear and concise real life examples and provides the viewer with tools and ways to apply the principles in their life and their world.

Every time I think I am finally starting to understand myself and how my shadows effect me and my world, Debbie writes another book that opens whole new realities for me in my journey to wholeness and transformation. The Shadow Effect is that and more. Having both Deepak and Marianne speak about this critical topic for the world today about its affect on us individually and as a collective gives now meaning to Jung's concept of "whole". This is a must read and allows the reader to experience three of the worlds foremost transformational leaders speak about the most critical topic facing everyone in the world today. Make sure reading this book is at the top of your priority list of things to do. I am reading it again so I don't miss a thing and giving to everyone I love.

There is one scene in The Shadow Effect that says it all - a swimmer tries to keep several beach balls under water, only to have them pop up, and hit her in the face. This explosive message illustrates the point of the movie. From start to finish, fascinating scenarios address some common hypocrisies that make life difficult and exhausting. The film exposes and explains, in riveting visuals and inspired dialogue, how we can revisit our experiences and learn from them rather than begrudge them. And on a grander scale, it takes on global implications, highlighting unforgettable personalities who speak of issues not often featured in Hollywood - compassion and forgiveness. Never has a "How To" piece been this engaging. You'll want to see The Shadow Effect with family and friends, again and again. I highly recommend it.

I've only read the first third of the book--Dr Chopra's contribution--so far. I'd recommend this portion in particular because it is very lucid and speaks in particular to everyone's view of why they don't feel perfect. Since no one can really be perfect and our world of lots of pressure points and the ready supply of off the shelf 'self-improvement' can make you feel even more stressed, depressed, angry or what have you, Dr. Chopra's suggested change in your viewpoint is affirming and helped me just when I needed this change in aspect in my thinking. It's a very constructive writing and I would recommend it highly. I've been working on connection to consciousness and I feel this understanding of the shadow will help me to be at peace with my true self.
