This book was an AMAZING read, Nansook is very factual and informative and I found myself in tears several times throughout the read. I have to admit, it took me 8 months to finish the book; what she went through was so terrible, and because it was a huge tigger given I was a prior Moonie myself. I just want to say a huge thank you to Nansook, for exposing the Moon family in a very graceful, and informative way. I grew up in the Moonie movement, and found my way out of it in 2011 after my divorce from my own arranged marriage.
There is no way to relate to what Nansook went through, but in a very empathetic, and hopefully humbling way, I can try to relate. You try to do everything you can, anything you can, to stay part of a community you grew up in, everything you can to save your relationship with your family, everything you can to save a relationship that you worked for your entire life to be in, everything you can to make it work. Thank you Nansook for this book.

Hong was handpicked by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon as wife of his eldest son, but it was no honeymoon. Hyo Jin was a womanizer and drug addict whose lapses were blamed on Hong. Having finally escaped the Moons with her children, she's free to tell her story.

I needed to read this when I was trying to figure out for myself as a young moonie whether or not Rev & Mrs. Moon were who they said they were. Reading this helped me to see all the idolatry, mysticism, and superstition in my life that was masquerading as holiness. From holy salt to palm readers, I am now free from it all. Nansook's heartbreaking experiences were truly awful, but illuminating the True Parents' denial and enabling of their son's addictions and abuses is truly important. Exposing Sun Myung Moon as an adulterer is even more important, because the crux of his self-made religion is sexual purity. This book show the moons for what they are: frauds. His followers deserve to know that. The Moons engaged in the trafficking of a 15 year old bride to their sex and drug addicted son, and then told her that it was her fault that she was beaten and spit on. I don't know what Jesus would have done in every circumstance, but it wasn't anything the Moons did.

As a young man recently exposed to the Unification Church and the idealistic point of view of the faith, I can only thank individuals like Nansook who I will now add to my list of heroes. Your story has not only moved me to tears but has brought me close up to the realities and understandings of how the human mind can work, and be tricked. I feel like I was there with you when you made those bold decisions to choose freedom and took control of your life. To think with a free mind, a healthy skeptic mind. Thank you, and I encourage anyone who has been touched by the Moon's to not undermine the idealistic points of views found by their doctrine, but rather to enjoin the good in them and continue to seek out truth. Read, question, know the self and liberate your heart. Your story has motivated me in this regard, at this point in life made me a better person in peaceful submission to God, the compassionate the merciful.

Thanks so much to Nansook Hong for having the courage to write this expose' on the Moon's. I couldn't put this book down. I read it in two days and I highlighted about 40% of it. My brother was sucked into the Moonies more than 30 years ago at a time when he was down and out so I have always been quite alarmed about what happened to him and have always wanted to learn as much as I could about Moon and his Unification "Church." I wouldn't have cared if I'd seen some positive transformation in my brother but what has happened to him has been mostly very negative. My brother has become very arrogant and judgmental of others. He looks down his nose at people and judges whether or not they are "Quality" people. He has become very serious, rigid, uptight, narrow minded and arrogant. He doesn't ever appear to be happy. Nobody who has known him his whole life would say that becoming a Moonie has been a positive experience for him. Certainly none of us would ever be inclined to join the Unification "Church" based on the changes we've seen take place in him.
The author explains that Moon teaches that Jesus wasn't allowed into the Kingdom of Heaven because he wasn't married when he was crucified. God's assignment had been for Jesus to get married and to recreate the Garden of Eden but he went and got himself killed instead and then went and got the Romans all riled up so therefore he wasn't fit to enter into the Kingdom. Jesus then begged "Rev." Moon to complete his mission on Earth and Moon accepted. Moon then did Jesus a big favor and married him to some old Korean hag on the astral plane and God finally allowed Jesus into paradise and Moon crowned him "Lord of Heaven." Alas, Jesus' new position was to be short lived as soon one of Moon's teenage sons was killed in a car accident so Moon stripped Jesus of his lofty new title and crowned his 17 year old son the new "Lord of Heaven" instead. I'm not sure what Moon has Jesus doing now, sweeping floors?
I kid you not. Moon is that nutty. He claims that many of the Founding Fathers and other past presidents totally support him. Now how in the world can we fact check any of his claims? You can't exactly go to a dead president and ask: "Mr. Jefferson, is it true that you support "Reverend" Moon and his whacky Unification Theology?" Moon is always very careful to make claims like this that can't possibly be verified and the fact that his followers just gobble up whatever ridiculous nonsense he says without ever questioning any of it is truly frightening. It turns out that "Reverend" Moon isn't even a reverend as he never attended seminary and doesn't have a degree in theology. Everything about the man is a lie. The Moonies are extremely puritanical. After they are "matched" in marriage by Moon they have to wait for at least three years before they can consummate their marriage as they are "so impure." This is rather bizarre as Moon has a long history of being a serial adulterer. Moon's first wife kicked him out and divorced him after continually catching him committing adultery. She'd been kind enough to take him back before even though he'd vanished for 6 years and hadn't paid her even one cent in child support. He has fathered illegitimate children. One of his illegitimate sons was killed in a train wreck in Japan and he has another one here in America named Sammy. Moon's own kids are totally dysfunctional (with the exception of his eldest daughter Je Jin. She's the only one in that entire family with any honesty and integrity. That's why she left and has denounced her father. She and Nansook went on 60 Minutes and revealed the truth).
Moon's eldest son Hyo Jin was the Devil incarnate! He took a BB Gun to school and shot up his classmates and got expelled. He had major drug and alcohol problems (he's now deceased) he viciously beat his wife continually for 14 years. During a particularly brutal beating while she was pregnant he kept screaming "I'll kill you! I'll kill this baby!!! He was furious because she'd thrown his cocaine down the toilet. He licked her blood off of his fist and said: "Ummm, your blood tastes good. I'll have to beat you more often!!!" He gave her an incurable case of genital herpes on their wedding day that he'd gotten from a prostitute when she was just 15 years old. He loved to get drunk and do drugs for days on end and watch porno films. He had a collection of 60 automatic weapons, some of which Moon gave to him. Now what's spiritual and holy about THAT??? Or any of this??? Hyo Jin's mother used to bring him as much as $600,000 in cash in shopping bags to the center he was running and by Hyo Jin's own admission in divorce court he used most of it on DRUGS!!! He claimed in court that he was penniless even though his father "Reverend" Moon is a Billionaire!! How come Moon didn't make his son wait three years to "purify" himself first? In Hyo Jin's case he should have been made to wait at least 30 years considering what a total sociopath he was!
Moon continues to evade paying his taxes even though he's spent time in prison for tax evasion. A tree is judged by the fruit it bears. How in the world can Moon and his wife claim to be the "True Parents" of all humanity when they can't even parent their own kids effectively? How in the world can his followers be so incredibly naive? How can they ignore all of Moon's incredible hypocrisy? I just don't get it. They just make excuses for him which is scary and the sign of a true cult member. Are they simpletons? How come I'm asking tough questions of Moon but my brother and all the rest of the Moonies didn't think to ask these same questions before signing up for this ridiculous cult? The brainwashing "workshops" that they undergo are apparently quite effective. Moon seems to be nothing more than a total KOOK with a Messianic complex. I realize this sounds very negative but it is all in the book and I have an ax to grind with Moon since he has affected me personally because of what he's done to my brother. My brother is definitely not the same person. Moon is definitely not the "True Messiah.: Anyone who thinks so is hopelessly lost.

This author unfortunately had to suffer with this deranged family by living with them and taking their abuse for so long! I believe she was the best qualified to write a book on these people, and so I really paid attention to everything she was saying! She did a great job and I am glad she is living a better life now that she got away from them! 5 stars!

Nansook's experience
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 5, 2008Verified Purchase
After getting the book, considering it was used and an ex library from wiltshire, and fairly good, the usual wear and tear and smudges (and chocolate). I find it 'lucky' to get a first edition...it even had pictures, that were of good quality!
Started on her experience on how she managed to escape from the mansion that she and her in-laws lived in. She started off as very naive, innocent girl, whose parents were in a prestigious position of serving rev moon and his wife, in business and in religious activities.
I read how brutal her life turned, when she became chosen for the eldest son, hyo jin. Despite the obvious, glaring evidence, he was still treated like a spoilt brat. hyo jin's exploits were known, yet nothing was done about it. Everything was blamed on Nansook, when the parents of hyo jin were not in control.
The book gave examples of 'interesting' things that would make a person think of what they are getting themself into such as the history of what eventuially turned into the divine principle and belief structure of the unification church (or cult as many would put).
The children of moon, if they had better raising by their parents, who knows, they would have been more happier, who knows this book would not have been written.
It was very touching and yet it made me angry. This is the sort of thing that is kept even from members of the church, the closer you get to moon, the more things are discovered. I think people are aware of what is said in this book are afraid to speak or there are those who have absolutely no idea because they 'refuse' to accept it, or call it lies.
Again I was aiming for something that could give an account. I got a life experience of someone who lived in the moon household as a daughter in law and saw what was going on
There were mentioning of Chung Hwa Pak- the tragedy of the six marys. But that has been recanted, original/copies destroyed and the truth from the first and original members will be going to their grave.
