From the Author

The Lost Girls is a science-fiction story that blends several genres. The lost girls of the title could be a girl's hockey team and their coach/schoolteacher from contemporary Earth who find themselves on Ellerkan, a planet that seems to be stuck in a medieval society. But like Ellerkan, the story is not what it seems. The other lost girls trapped on this planet are the Androktones, genetically engineered clones designed and programmed for war. They are strong, fearless and viciously brutal. But they are not evil; they do what they do because they have to, they have no choice. And they don't age or die, they have to be killed. But the war was a long time ago, and the Androktones that survive are now old, tired, and not as perfect as they once were. And the fact that they are female means that they are still hunted by the Knights and Royalty of Ellerkan for the sport and pleasure they can bring. The Royal Hunts are a barbaric tradition as ancient as the Androktones themselves. But is it the hunters or the hunted that are evil? Rolf L'Epine, a tailor at the Court of King L'Hage is the first to question this. And it is his relationships with the Androktones and the teenage girls from the hockey team that form the backbone of the story. Female characters dominate the scene throughout, many of them in strong and attractive leading roles. The Lost Girls is a blend of feuding medieval Knights, lost technology, equally lost contemporary teenagers, and yes, a dragon of the fiercest kind.

From the Inside Flap

The Lost Girls is the first part of a story entitled In the Shadow of Mountains. Although self-contained this story has its roots in The Friendly Ambassador series of books which introduced the female Androktones. Warrior clones bred for war, they are the real Amazons of Myth. In those books the Androktones were in the ascendance, now, in The Lost Girls, they are all but extinct. In this story the plotting of treason by Knights and Lords on the feudal world of Ellerkan depends on the successful use of ancient technology that they don't fully understand. And their attempts to open a portal to other worlds with the intention of finding new weapons instead results in the arrival of a girl's hockey team and their teacher. At one moment they are travelling home from a match, and in the next they are in a deep forest. What follows is the forced association of the surviving Androktones and the girls in order to overcome the monstrous disaster that quickly unfolds. And the monster in question is a dragon in the mould of any from Tolkien. The idea behind the story is the relationship between the Androktones, old and tired but still powerful and dangerous, and the youthful innocence and equally brash and modern vitality of the girls. By now the Androktones are sick of their forced way of life, but it is a yoke that they cannot easily shake off. But while the story explores how the Androktones adapt to these very confusing young adults, it is also about the way the girls slowly come to terms with both the Androktones and this old fashioned world. As Jemma says at one point, "What? No TV?" The Lost Girls is a dangerous and adventurous story with romance and vengeance in equal amounts. There are no real heroes or villains, just people with different viewpoints and agendas, some more righteous than others.
