Editorial Reviews
When is an H.P. Lovecraft story not a book? When is an album by The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, of course! Following their seven year tour of outer space in support of Spaceship Zero: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, The Thickets return to Earth and the waters off New Zealand in a very special operatic adaptation of Lovecraft s The Shadow Out of Time. In HPL s original tale set in 1913, Professor Peaslee of Massachusetts has his mental faculties swapped by an alien mind and learns terrible truths about life on Earth and beyond. The Vancouver, BC nerdcore band s The Shadow Out of Tim their third full-length album and fifth CD release features modern marine biologist Dr. Timothy Vess descent into madness brought on by similar circumstances. The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, a cult mainstay since 1992, take you on a rock n roll tour through space and time, painting sonic pictures of the ocean deep, mysterious ruin-covered islands, and Paleocene jungles. Five out of five Cthulhu scholars agree The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets The Shadow Out of Tim is the perfect soundtrack to occult investigation!

I'm not a big fan of "punk". I'd never heard of The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets.
But cripes I love this recording. From the opener, "Theme to an Earthquake", which immediately made me think of something I heard on the soundtrack from "Wristcutters: A Love Story" (the part where the "Eskimo" is throat-singing) to the manic "Nyarlathotep", I don't think there's a clunker or filler on the album.
And man, the energy!
I love it. Spaceship Zero was good, but this is a masterpiece. Much better than that earlier recording.
Highly recommended.
The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets are always fun and great to listen to, but this album raises it to another level. It's even better than Spaceship Zero, and that's pretty amazing in itself. The entire album is great, but the tracks A Marine Biologist, No Way, Operation: Get the Hell Out of Here are the best, and especially Nyarlathotep (the whole song is sung in Middle Egyptian!)
Not only are the songs fun and funny to listen to, as the Thickets always are, but they really rock, especially Marine Biologist and the others I mentioned. I've played them for some mundanes I know, who had never heard of the Thickets before and couldn't care less about the Cthulhu Mythos or horror and gaming references and puns, and they thought A Marine Biologist was just flat-out an amazing song.
This isn't just a great Thickets album, it's a great album, period.
The album cover, with the book that looks like a '70s era Lovecraft compilation paperback, is especially rad, and the story described in the songs, a pastiche of The Shadow out of Time (hence the pun album title) sounds like it would be great to read.
I think if you've liked anything else by the Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, you will probably love this CD. If you haven't heard anything by them, give them a try - they're a kind of 90s sounding rock band that focuses on Lovecraft and similar subjects.
I was a little skeptical how well the Lovecraft-based story could work over the course of the tracks, but it actually works very well. None of the songs sound same-y at all and they have the odd background noises I expect from Darkest of the Hillside Thickets. The vocals are more polished as well. The entire thing works very well as a re-interpretation of the classic Lovecraft story about the Great Race of Yith.
I think the lyrics also capitalize on one of the most horrific aspects of the story - not the outer space creatures, but the feeling of loss and absolute displacement after coming out of amnesia. This sounds like the CD could be mopey, but the fast, upbeat music keeps it moving and gives it the frenzied quality of the main character's investigation. Some of the vocals are a little hard to understand, but it always fits with the song.
There's a couple more tracks after the "story" winds down, but they are still very Lovecraft oriented. The track sung entirely in Egyptian is a bit of an odd fit with the other songs, but is catchy in its own right.
Highly recommended - great to listen to, this CD is an inspired piece and a lot of fun to sing along with in the car.
Of particular note, however, is the fact that it's telling a story inspired by Lovecraft's "The Shadow Out Of Time," but in so doing, *improves* on it. Lovecraft's tale was largely built around the mysterious dreams of the amnesiac narrator, but this story has not only adventure and danger, but conveys the hardships of the protagonist well. (What if you lost five years of your life, and no one would tell you what happened during the missing time? What if you could tell something important was happening, but *no one would believe you*?)
A worthy addition to the collection of an oft-underrated band. Buy it.

Nach mehrmaligem Hören hat sich meine Meinung dann aber völlig geändert!
Das kein Lied besonders auffällt, liegt vermutlich daran, dass alle Songs erstklassig sind! (Naja, von "Back To Melanesia" und "No Way" hatte ich schon gut 2 Wochen nen Ohrwurm. Und es wurd mit jedem Mal Hören besser!)
Vergleicht man "Shadow Out Of Tim" mit "Great Old Ones", "Spaceship Zero" oder "Cthulhu Strikes Back", dann muss ich sagen, musikalisch sind die Jungs eindeutig reifer geworden!
Wer "The Shadow Out Of Time" in Verbindung mit dem Thickets-Humor mag, wird dieses Album lieben!
