And as that wouldn’t have been enough, I was spoiled with a magnificent sci-fi meets Arthurian story with a plot that left me breathless. I would give this story many more stars than only five if possible. Amazing!
The author weaves two seemingly independent storylines. Ashira, a maiden, is sold away into a non-consensual marriage. Meanwhile, Arthur, who lives in the underwater city of Avalon, longs to abandon his current life and become a warrior. The author writes in a vivid style that makes everything - the characters, actions, scenes - leap off the page. The story really does come alive before the reader's eyes, making for a wonderful read.
I am not one to reveal too much of a story line to people who have not read a novel and who are considering doing that. For me the story is everything.
I will say that this is a fascinating novel and I want to write about what I see in the crafting. The writer clearly has an exquisite command of the elements that make Shadow Over Avalon an enigma that demands to be read to completion. I loved the story.
Settings are beautifully drawn. The Author has given the reader the fine gift of clarity. It is possible to see a vista of the entire scene from the well crafted sentences and word choices. To me the dialogue is appropriate for the story line with different cultures represented by the way they speak. I can nearly hear their voices as they utter their words.
Shadow Over Avalon has a blend of Medieval times with the technology of the Future. Yet the future technology is explained in such a way as to leave the reader with understanding and logical conclusions. There is incredible creativity at work with the detail and attention paid to providing a strong picture of the world building that has been achieved.
I feel as if there is something for everyone in this novel. Romance, conflict between races, high tech devices and genetic engineering, combat, strategy, intrigue, mystery and many elements from various genres. It is one of those reads that makes you want to keep going long after bedtime.
In C.N. Lesley’s re-telling of the Arthurian legend we read two story threads that weave into one.
First, the reader is introduced to Ashira, a king's daughter in the surface-world, traded away in marriage to Uther, The Dragon. She is betrayed, cast out, but as a “War Maid” chooses her own destiny.
Arthur, living in a futuristic undersea community, is trying to discover his lineage while, at the same time, trying to evade the agenda of the "seers." Arthur fights to help the surface-dwellers. While ensuring he not spend his life as servant to the sentient known as the Archive.
Dual story lines woven through time until these two worlds join forces. The reader discovers the connection between them as just enough information is revealed to keep the reader hooked while building toward the ultimate big picture.
Within the pages of Shadow Over Avalon Lesley has created an original and extravagant re-telling of the Arthurian legend. A tale in which an amazing new future world full of uncertain danger and an abundant, multi-layered plot twist into an original read.
Shadow Over Avalon will enthrall not only science fiction/fantasy fans but all who enjoy a fast-paced, action packed story full of adventure, and characters that readers will care about and love. As you close the last page of Shadow Over Avalon you can’t help but think, is there a sequel?

Growing up fantasy books to me were Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarks. Then for many years I did not read any fantasy or science fiction. On recommendation from a friend I purchased SHADOW OVER AVALON. That night I went to bed, normally reading for thirty minutes before I turn the lights off.At 4am I finished the book. It is a mesmerizing story, fast paced, with a plot that verges on being beyond imagination - people below the ocean, people on the surface, creatures from space, all woven into the fabric of the future so tightly you are there. For the lovers of fantasy works you SHOULD read this book.
