Ricco and Mari are two tortured souls with deep secrets that could destroy them both. Nevertheless, despite realizing that Mari has been sent to kill him, Ricco recognizes her as his mate when her shadow reaches towards his. Ricco come clean with his family about the threat that he has struggled to keep them from learning. At the same time Ricco gently courts Mari and lets her discover that he is a man of honor and can be trusted. Mari is a true warrior in her own right, she is compassionate and discerning, dispatches villains with deadly precision yet she is shown to have doubts and vulnerabilities, not just a cold-eyed killer.
The secondary characters fleshed out this saga of the Ferraro family and the community that the Ferraro's protect. There is definitely some spark between Emmauelle Ferraro and her family's nemesis, Valentino Saldi. It will be interesting to see where that relationship goes. Another intriguing shadow rider family emerged, the Archambaults and their family history as executioner's of wrong-doers sounds like a very fascinating story that needs further exploration in subsequent books. Very highly recommended. I look forward to future books in this series.

But the darkness in which they so often find sanctuary can also consume them...
Second, however, is what I don't like about this book:
a) not much story, mostly sex; I wound up skipping most of it due to it being boring repetition. I'd like to see more actual story instead of this filler
b) silly bondage "art" felt like a shades of grey rip off and not that entertaining
c) First third of the book seemed to be filled with immature whininess, not something you'd expect from hero/heroines that you like
All in all, this book was a bit of a disappointment.
