Iron Mask is the project of guitarist Dushan Petrossi and "Shadow of the red baron" is their latest release and overall 3rd studio album. Although "Iron mask" brings together a good number of influences and styles (which we will be looking into), they are generally based on neoclassical metal."...Red baron" is a surprisingly strong/colorful album which offers a very good amount of memorable songs.

In terms of composition structure the album features equal amounts of neoclassical power metal tracks and melodic 80s-influenced catchy hard rockers (the same approach that Firewind followed on "The Premonition"). The best example of the first category is the title track whose fast pace, huge chorus and sky battle lyrics forces one to think of "Primal Fear". On the other hand "Forever in the Dark" is an equally good display of the album's melodic hard rock/metal side; plus there is a super catchy, almost party metal, anthem on this release in "Sahara".

This collection of diverse elements is mainly due to the impressive qualifications of the musicians involved; master mind Dushan, lays a good variety of neoclassical scales and shredding solos a la Malmsteen effortlessly, while also contributing simple but infectious guitar melodies (in the style of Magnus Karlsson)plus twin guitar harmonics (in "Primal Fear" fashion). Lead singer Goetz Mohre is proven an extremely appropriate choice sounding precisely like Graham Bonnet and Stephen Frederick (on the power metal tunes). The line up is completed by bassist Vassili Moltchanov, keyboardist Andreas Lindahl and the furious Erik Stout on drums.

The compositions are worked to perfection on "...

Originally released in 2009, Shadow of the Red Baron is the third album from Belgian power metal band Iron Mask. The band, which is led by guitarist Dushan Petrossi (Magic Kingdom) plays epic, neoclasically-minded power metal along the lines of Yngwie Malmsteen and Narnia.

Shadow of the Red Baron is a very strong album, combining the best elements of power metal and neoclassical metal. Petrossi's blinding guitar work steals the show, but unlike a lot of shredders he seems to realize that songwriting means more than just stringing together guitar solos. Goetz Mohre's strong, powerful vocals are the perfect balance to Petrossi's guitar work. Oliver Hartmann (Avantasia, ex-At Vance) lends his pipes on “Dreams” and provides backing vocals throughout. The songs are heavy, powerful, very melodic and all share a common tone, even if Shadow of the Red Baron isn't a concept album. They just feel like part of a stronger whole.

This is melodic power metal done really well. The guitar work alone will satisfy fans of Malmsteen and Impelliteri, while the songwriting and vocals ought to win over fans of power metal in general, and bands like Primal Fear, Masterplan and Allen-Lande. If that's your kind of music, Iron Mask is a band you need to discover, and Shadow of the Red Baron is a great place to start.

Edition Notes: Shadow of the Red Baron was reissued by AFM in 2016. The new version features rerecorded versions of “Fifth Son of Winterdoom” and “The Picture of Dorian Gray” with new singer Artur Almeida as bonus tracks. They're neat additions, but probably not worth buying this twice if you already own the Lion pressing of the album.

Disclosure: I was given a MP3 copy of this album by the label for review.
