French police officer Antoine Marcas, who is also a Freemason, is investigating a murder at the French embassy in Rome. The cause of death is three blows. One blow to the shoulder blade, one to the back of the neck, and a finishing blow to the forehead. On the surface, the attack does not seem in any way special, but Marcas know differently. This is the exact way the founder of The Freemasons was murdered 1500 years ago.
With the begrudging assistance of Special Agent Jade Zewinski, Marcas is put on the trail of another secret society with ominous intent. The Thule Society was tasked with being researchers of the occult for The Third Reich. Only, they had been in existence long before World War II and still plan to be instrumental in the creation of the master race.
The story is acutely woven fact and fiction from over a millennia history. Being impossible to tell the difference sets the plot at a break neck pace. The lead characters create a wonderful balance of scepticism and belief that appeals to the reader no matter which side they feel is correct.
The writing is spectacular and leaves the reader hanging on every word. Each chapter quickly flows into the next. This is a book that will not let the reader put it down. I can't wait for the next book!
A word about Freemasonry in the series: Marcas belongs to a Grand Orient of France lodge. American Masonry is quite different from the Freemasonry of the Grand Orient; American Masons, qua Masons do not get involved in politics or matters of religion. Grand Orient Masons can and do. In several cases Marcas acts quite from how an American Mason would act. Remember that Jade is also a Mason, something which can happen in France in several bodies calling themselves Masonic. In the US, Masonry is exclusively masculine.
Before one claims to be bored by Masonic references in the novel, one should realize that Masonry in France during World War II was a persecuted organization; many Masons in various French Masonic groups were also in the Resistance.
My own verdict on the novel and its successors is that the technique interlacing events in the distant past with today's society is that it makes for fast reading, especially in the airport. If your interrupted in your reading, it's always possible to retrieve where you are in the book because the chapters are short and fast-moving, I am glad that we finally have an English-language translation of the book and look forward to more so that the English-speaking public will meet up with these characters, But, please, Ms. Translator, don't bowdlerize the books any more.
