Diana Massey has been in love with her husband since she was sixteen years old, but now he's gone. After losing him as a result of an on the job accident, she has been stuck in her grief. Just when she makes the choice to move on, a former trainee of her husband's comes to her with some new theories on his death.
Officer Carter Ryan knows there's more behind Detective Donald Massey's death, the pieces just don't add up. With the help of Massey's widow, he is going to get to the bottom of it and find justice for the man he's looked up to for over a decade. What neither of them expect is the connection they feel to one another, or just how deep this mystery will take them.
With a mix of romance, action, and an intriguing mystery, I was completely pulled into this story. Diana and Carter were interesting and likable characters. I really enjoyed how their relationship developed. Even though they had an intense connection, they took things slowly and let the tension build.
LaRoche delivers a well written, captivating, and intriguing novel. In the Shadow of the Shield has a little bit of everything: a sexy "good guy" hero, a strong heroine, sweet romance, suspense, some tears, action, and more. This is the first book I've read by LaRoche and it won't be my last.
I haven't read the first book and the series, and I didn't feel ungrounded at all when I read this one.
After Diana Massey watches her husband, an officer in the Virginia Beach Police Department, die suddenly and suspiciously after a routine emergency call, she sets out to find answers.
Those answers could prove as deadly to her as they did her husband. When she begins to uncover a web of lies, crime, and corruption in her late husband's department, she starts to receive death threats, and worse. Luckily, she has backup in the form of Carter Ryan, her late husband's protégée, who vows to protect her and help her get to the bottom of her husband's death. But can Diana handle the guilt and uncertainty she feels when she begins to fall for the handsome younger cop? Her husband, her high school sweetheart and the only man she ever loved, has only been dead a year, and she isn't sure if she's ready to move on.
This was a fast-paced book with plenty of action, and plenty of emotion. The romance was mature and sweet, with just a little bit of spice. I recommend it as an entertaining way to pass those long winter evenings.

In the Shadow of the Shield is a hot romantic mystery. Readers will fall in love with the protagonists instantly. The suspense created by Carolyn LaRoche is brilliant. Readers will be kept guessing as to what happens next as well as what deveolps between the two main characters.
Carolyn LaRoche has stunningly created a realistic world that can happen any time to anyone of us. A woman watches as her husband is killed right in front of her. That should be the worst part but then there’s there son who just lost his father. Pain, lost, and healing are great themes found throughout this spectacular thriller mystery. Then there’s a police officer who was mentored by the young woman’s husband. He needs her help just as much as she needs him. Can fate allow these two individuals, who have suffered find the peace they need? Or will it destroy them further?
Overall, I highly recommend Carolyn LaRoche’s novel, In the Shadow of the Shield. The chemistry between to suffering souls is enough to keep readers hooked. Also, the intensity of the dangerous situation makes readers fall deeper and deeper into the plot.
